After some more googling, all I can find about Labs being banned is:

Some jackass in Ontario *supposedly* proposed banning them around the same time the province banned pit bulls, due to the large number of bites by Labs.

Dick Cheney's lab was banned from Camp David after attacking Bush's Scotty.

Sorry, I'm not buying this.

No, it doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? I understand several airlines are now banning short nosed "flat faced" dogs, (thus the pug on the list?) because many have died in flight.

Fox terrier has me stumped though. I can see it being banned for hunting because it's considered inhumane for a fox, and the dog can be subjected to severe cruelty but I would think that would be more of a UK thing.

I think Labs and Retrievers are on the list because some places restrict dogs based simply on their size. Like over 50 lbs and such.

Geesh. The dog we had more trouble, agression and snapping wise with was a cocker spaniel. She would have taken off a finger if you touched her foot. But she looked very innocent otherwise and nobody was afraid of her.

My dog now is a mix of terrier, probably shepard and from the lanky body and really really long legs jiraffe. He barks loudly but isn't agressive but looks sufficently so the neighbors kids have quit making my yard a shortcut. Since everyone on the next few streets have a couple of dogs, and mostly they have at least one larger one, I'd say most are banned somewhere.

unfortunatly socal, labs are on the list because thanks to backyard breeding practices theyve become a high og biteincident breed...
infact the ONLY breeds ive ever had "agression issues" with is labs and JRT's

not saying there all agresive an personalyi dont belive in bree bans at all...but the sad truth is bad breeding has taken dogs like labs, golens and cockers (all of which by their very description an esign should be weet hapy go lucky dogs) and tuerned them into genetic mental messes...and breed bans are generally base on "docimente bite cases" reported to hospitals and drs as well as media representation of said breeds being involved in "incidents"

My grandmother had an absolutely evil miniature poodle years before I was born, he bit my grandpa badly once, latched on and wouldn't let go. My mom showed me photos of him where he looked completely deranged. Aggression can happen in any dog. There are a few dogs on that list that I might agree with an overall ban on, but I can't believe some of the breeds listed! It's surprising that there are so many working dogs on the list (mountain dogs/herding dogs/livestock guardians/sled dogs/etc). Probably a result of people not understanding the temperament of these types of dogs, not training them, and not giving them outlets to work and exercise as they were meant to do. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners!

So sad.

I've seen before where pugs are on banned lists in some places. I really don't understand it. I've worked with all kinds of dogs and I've never met an aggressive pug. I'm sure some exist somewhere, but honestly, how much harm could they do? I'm way more afraid of chihuahuas!

Truth! At the shelter, I've got no problems taking the pitties out of their kennel (although I've crashed heads with excited dogs a couple of times-ow!) but some of the chis can make you a little nervous about taking them out!
I don't recall meeting any aggressive pugs either. I think some of these bans are HOA or apartment bans. I can not imagine a town or other local goverment body banning a lab or pug. Like Foxy said, due to bad breeding, goldens, cockers, and doxies can be more likely to bite than you'd expect, but I'll eat my hat if a town anywhere has tried to ban them.
