Hey I know this thread won't be popular with some however I feel like IF we were to require parents pay a nominal fee like lets say $100.00 a year or for their own bussing then finally we could get something done.

I mean in our school the bus goes 1 block and makes its first stop...really are you SERIOUS!!!!

That is why we had to cut our GIFTED AND MUSIC PROGRAMS!! Seems like our priorities are wrong.

Why does everything have to be free. We work 2 jobs each just to give our children what they need!

NOW DONT TELL ME THAT PARENTS CANT DO THAT...

Isn't that where a big chunk of property taxes go? I know I pay a hefty amount to my local school district every year.
I guess it's free if you rent your home, instead of own...

I think this is something you need to bring up at your school board meetings. Every township/district/school has it's own budget and issues. This is not a nationwide or educationwide issue.

Personally, I am happy with how my district spends its money and I don't even have kids.

Some school districts do charge for bus. Some on a per-ride, others a set fee per year.

Also if you rent. The owner of the place pays the property taxes that support the school, and the taxes s/he pays are built into the rent cost.

I agree with the other posters, this is a regional issue, not a national one. Most of the schools in my school district are surrounded by fields and if a student is close enough to walk, they usually do. There is a crossing guard at the one school that is in town. We still have all of our arts programs and the athletes have to pay to play at both HS and MS level.

You're paying property taxes in the rent.

I drive my son to and from school, but as a child I had to per per ride. Thing is in the US every child has the right to an education. What if the parent can't afford to pay 100$ for the bus? Even though people sometimes make a lot of money they have a lot of other things going on. A lot of people are pay check to paycheck these days.

Default Right to choose

I wonder if any place has tried using vouchers for education? Give the parents vouchers and let them choose the school that would best suit their child's needs.

The voucher would be good for any public school tuition, but the parent might need to add cash to it for private schools.

I have coworkers who have told me that they would love to send their kids to a school close to where they work.

Has this been tried anywhere?

It's not free. It's paid for by tax revenues the school receives from local and state governments' budgets.

Laying additional user fees on top of the taxes paid provides a reason for parents/future parents not to buy housing in your area. It raises their direct cost of having kids in the district, which would factor into the decision where to buy a house and raise a family.

Generaly, What I've seen is if the Family (Child) is on free or subsized lunch program, the bus, activities, Etc fees are waved.
