Yes, it's possible. Both parties have bylaws that allow a sudden candidate replacement.
There are plenty of reasons for the bylaws; nominees have suddenly died in accidents, have suffered strokes and heart attacks, or have had hidden records of mental illness or the like that were disclosed.
Most have resigned their nomination, if they were able, but others were forced out.
It would be incredibly difficult to do, however, this late in the day. Millions of printed ballots have already been printed and distributed, some early voters have already voted, and computerized voting machines have been programmed and locked.
Forcing Trump out now would probably require a nullification of this election, followed by an emergency declaration passed through Congress to authorize another election. This would extend the current Presidency past the last legal date, and would be the same for all incumbents running on the same ballot.
The legalities would be massive and very complicated. A second election could be put back as much as 120 days, just to get it all accomplished and legal.
Trump will not go quietly into the night. He would fight this all the way, and he has almost 2 years of electoral inertia on his side.
It's most probable that the GOP won't make the attempt. Its better for the party to suffer a crushing defeat than to have to fight this fight; the fallout damage down ticket would be even more massive, and it would set a very terrible precedent that could kill either party in the future. It's just too dangerous now.
"You can't always get what you want, but you sometimes get what you need." This defeat may be the best thing that ever happened to the current Republican party.
The Democrats went through one 50 years ago, and the disaster changed the party, shaping it in a manner that was more in tune with the times than it was before.
The defeat didn't last long for the Democrats; 4 years later, a Democratic nominee was elected to the White House. The same thing could happen with the Republicans in 2020. There's nothing like a landslide defeat to motivate the losers to get some changes going.
