"Record earnings for the world’s largest publicly traded oil company have become almost as predictable as the surge of gasoline prices at the pump in recent years, and for the second quarter income rose 14 percent, to $11.68 billion.

It was the highest quarterly profit ever for any American company, as Exxon made nearly $90,000 a minute."

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/01/bu.../01oil.html?hp

Which president do you believe can somehow get these prices down? Clearly drilling in ANWAR is not the reason why oil prices are high. Doesn't it seem like the oil companies are just lovin' our PAIN AT THE PUMP?

Did you know oil companies spend MORE on ADVERTISING about how they are exploring alternative energy than they actually spend on exploring other energy sources? That's how shady they are.

Why are Americans putting up with prices like this, and profits like this for the oil companies, for a commodity that is a necessity? I mean how far can they take this before this country's economy completely crumbles.

Do you believe in a windfall profits tax on these outrageous oil company earnings?

Since the Republicans got us into this mess, do you really trust them to get us out?!

Our poor country is going down..

You must be one of the only Americans to not have a problem with oil prices or to connect the oil industry to the prices. Like the prices have nothing to do with oil and the industry just profits gratuitously to the tune of $90,000 per minute. No, this was EIGHT YEARS in the making!

Wake me up when you start caring about your energy prices.

yeah thats true, we should switch our stance to a short sided half ass solution in drilling in the US and then complain about the cost of driving to work after making the conscious decision to live 50 miles from our jobs. Our own decisions are the real enemy here!!!!!

Americans aren't going broke...stupid Americans are. Those that chose ARMs, those that chose Interest Only Loans, those that chose to live beyond their means through credit, those that bought homes for investments and not for homes, those who feel the need to have big hulking SUVs just because they are big hulking SUVs.....those are the people crying. Not me. I am crying because too many people see this as a crash and not a reset of an economy that got too fat too fast. It's back to reality people.

Agreed, nevertheless much of business today depended on those stupid Americans and their credit card-SUV mindset. And companies and entire cities and states thathave depended on easy credit for many years.

Lightbulb Record Oil Profits While Americans are Going Broke

<sarcasm>The working poor should just shut up!

The solution is so obvious I shouldn't even have to verbalize it.

Anyone who's concerned about the affordability of fuel should just go out and buy lots of oil company stocks. Let the market decide! </sarcasm>

I fail to sympathize with those who are feeling the pinch due to poor decision making. You cannot, however, lump those people alongside others who got the sh*t end of the stick even though they did everything they should have.
