The bipartisan consensus on the general direction of the legislation was reported just hours before President Bush was to host presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain and congressional leaders at the White House for discussions on how to clear obstacles to the unpopular rescue plan.

The only way this is a valid argument is if the bill will be debated on the floor of the senate at the exact same time as the debate on Friday night. Do you think that's going to happen?
What do any of your counter posts have to do with the Friday night debates?

I can't rep you yet, but thank you--you made my afternoon!

Except that McCain never does his job as a senator, anyway. Of course, you probably wouldn't know that, since you've probably never checked his voting record. In fact, you probably just vote for whatever Republican boob there is.

Barack Obama has missed 295 votes (45.9%) during the current Congress. See a list of his missed votes since 1991 (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/o000167/votes/missed/ - broken link) or see a full list of vote missers.

And McCain is even worse. Hasn't been there since April. So what's your point?

The debate is Friday evening. Congress will not be in session. There's absolutely no reason for McCain to weasel out of this, lest to show his ability to pull out one more gimmick from a deeply unserious campaign.

For the record, this is McCain's public thought process on the lending crisis...

"The economies fine!' -> "Let's organize a commission to study it!" -> "Fire the SEC Chairman!" ->"Suspend the campaign, Delay the Debates!"

Of course, just before Suspending the Campaign, We Can't Politicize This!, One-heartbeat-away told us that she has foreign policy experience because Putin has flown over Alaska. That's some pathetic flailing around right there. Not what I'm looking for in a President.

Running for president is his job too since he was elected by the American people to represent his party and if he can't handle the burden and responsibilities of being both an an elected U.S. Senator and an elected nominee for president then he should drop out of the race.
Thank. You.

Default Obama-McCain debate to go ahead: Commission

The plans for this forum have been underway for more than a year and a half. The CPD’s mission is to provide a forum in which the American public has an opportunity to hear the leading candidates for the president of the United States debate the critical issues facing the nation. We believe the public will be well served by having all of the debates go forward as scheduled.”

It would appear that McCain has painted himself into a corner.

If he doesn't show up, he's afraid to debate Obama.

If he does show up, his "suspended campaign" is revealed to be the cheap political gimmick it really is.

The GOP smacks of desperation at this point. They seem to sense impending doom. They're probably right about that.
