At least he (Gregg) was man enough to admit that he made a mistake in accepting the post in the first place, and for that I give the man credit.....If he could not be 100% for the POTUS then he shouldn't be there...Simple as that.
I agree with you. I don't know why Gregg was interested in the job in the first place, except perhaps because Obama said time and time again that he wanted people who had different views than he does in his cabinet. Gregg may have believed he could add a fiscal conservative's voice to the mix but it later became clear that they wouldn't listen.
I CAN imagine that Gregg's upset by the call to take the Census out of Commerce and make it a political football. That's a serious diss for WHOEVER is the Commerce Secretary.

I am beginning to question the reliability of posting articles from the internet. I was going to challenge your statement about "taking the Census out of Commerce" because the CBS article stated that Obama was going to leave Census under Commerce. I went back and the article has been taken down.

I've seen three different cable news outlets reporting it. No one's recanted. Of course, things like this do take on the "feeding frenzy" mentality so they're probably all using the same source.
The GOP pulled this type of crap in Texas and redrew the congressional district lines to favor Republicans. It stunk then and if the Dems pull a similar stunt NATIONWIDE, it will stink to high heaven.

My only point was that the original reporting was that Obama was going to leave Census under Commerce and would be minimally involved. The link containing that info has been removed from the CBS site. If that is the case, Gregg's reason for refusing the appointment is questionable.
Lahood represents the district in rural central Illinois where Caterpillar is headquartered. The construction projects in the stimulus package would benefit Caterpilllar. Obama also won big time in central Illinois (that's right, it's not just Chicago that voted for Obama; the guns-and-religion region of Illinois also voted for him). Lahood really had no GOP backlash to worry about.
Obama was at Cat today, with their CEO at his side. Obama campaigned down here for some local politicians while still in the Senate, he knows his way around downstate. He's now on to the capitol for Lincoln's 200th birthday commemoration.
Apparently, that's the difficulty. Gee, maybe he should appoint Barney Frank to appease the gay lobby and continue the malfeasance.
isn't an honest person so hard to find these days? well, gregg sounded honest to me, at least he admitted that this administration and he didn't see eye to eye. I'll bet alot of people who hate their jobs (if they have a job) don't have the intestinal fortitude to tell their bosses where they stand. I just think President Obama should be picking people from his own party, and quit trying the bi-partisan method, dems and pubs sometimes have very wide differences of opinion.

"Especially with Gregg, a down-the-line conservative Republican, Obama took a gamble by inviting a potential naysayer into his inner circle. If critics want to portray Obama as misguided or opportunistic, they won't get much help from Gregg.
"Obama has 'aggressively reached out across the aisle, and I immensely respect that, and I immensely respect him,' Gregg told reporters after withdrawing his nomination. 'And I know he's going to be a strong and effective and good president.'" - yahoo news
I think he caved to Boehner and his ilk. Gregg dared to break off from his peer group. Either that or he planned on doing this all along.
Obama usurping the census was one reason and shutting the republicans out of crafting the Porkapalooza Bill was the other - along with finally realizing that obama is what we have all been saying - a socialist.
