The exact same criminal law would apply if they performed in a museum.

It's not only the growing power of the Orthodox church, but the fact that the government backs it and vice versa. That's what ended very sadly for Pussi Riot.
That, and the fact that a lot of Russians at this point became vigilant, preferring to stomp on everything that threaten their sense of unity. National self-defense mechanism at work if I can put it this way.

Yep, I know. The Orthodox Church not big and strong enough to take some idiotic rantings designed to provoke on the chin. Soon it won't be just being sent to jail but will graduate to executions. A lovely slippery slope heading towards taliban like "justice".

If only I could send everyone who offends my sensibilities to jail.... Wait a minute... I don't want to. As long as they are not harming anyone or inciting hatred I could not care less. I will get annoyed with people and press the ignore button ( whther in my head or on the computer...) and leave it at that. Russiaonline has consistently annoyed the hell out of me and defamed my character quite nicely and I have no desire to send him/her to jail. Go figure hey !?

P.U.S.S.Y Riot should have been done for vandalism or disturbance of the peace and given community hours picking up rubbish or cleaning all those beautiful churches. Anything else is utterly absurd and ridiculous and IMO evil. A show of force disproportionate to the offence.

That's what they were tried for. As for community service... For some reason the judge decided to ignore the president and the prime minister, and send stupid punks to prison.

WHOA, whoa, whoa! In what "Western", developed country do judges take orders from the President or Prime Minister? In India or Bangladesh, yes. See, this is what erasure's talking about re: the middle class and businesspeople leaving Russia due to the corruption and lack of rule of law.

This is what the article discusses. The Church's close ties to Putin.

Who would have thought that my departure caused the major shake-up of Russian staple definitions?!
