Hi,

I have been studying French and am wondering whether France would also be a feasible place to move, after completing a bachelor's degree as an international student here (from US) in Canada. I'm majoring in the environmental component of geography and would likely go into green city planning or something similar after. Here's the criteria I'm looking for in a French city. Which city sounds like the best match?

1. It should be a medium-large city; at least a few hundred thousand people or so.
2. There should be a fairly lively fine arts scene (I'm a painter too)
3. The climate should be moderate. I don't like hot weather, as in more than 85 degrees F or so, but don't mind rain. Nearby outdoor opportunities should be available, so greenery and mountains should be nearby.
4. Job/career opportunities should be good for city planners, geographers, etc. (Guessing you guys don't know much about this though).
5. Though France is known to not be vegetarian friendly, it would be a major plus if the city was more accommodating to non-meat eaters.

Thanks so much!

When you say a "moderate" climate, does that mean you are also averse to the cold? The first city that came to mind based on your criteria was Grenoble, but I'm not sure if it would be too cold for you in the winter.

Someone posted an OP very similar to this in the "World" section. Everyone seems to want a mediterranean climate, a strong arts community, medium-to-large city, affordable housing. In other words: perfection at half the price.

OP, how would you get a work visa for France? Is there a reason you think your skills would be in such demand that home-grown talent couldn't satisfy the demand? Have you thought this through?

10.5% unemployment. Bad timing.

I am thinking about Metz in the north, it's very green with plenty of parks, many pedestrians streets, no idea about vegetarianism to be honest... population is around 200000 aprox.
The weater I think is also OK for you as you are Canadian and France is not too hot and not too cold.

Lille in the North of France, 230 000 inhabitants in the city, 1 100 000 in the urban area(conglomeration).
The city possesses the second museum of France (musée des beauts-arts(museum of Fine Arts)) after the Louvre in Paris.
Lille has a big park called citadel, the zoo is free.
Many green spaces are in project in the metropolis.
You are near Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne...
Weather: the same that in London.
100 000 students, 3 university.
There are some mountains near Lille : Icemountain in Comines, Noeux-Les-Mines loisinor..... :-)

That's not how it works. The employment rate of France is:

Employment-to-population ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

63.8%.

The OP just needs to realize that unemployment is very high in France. And, since he needs a visa, he is better off looking somewhere else.

You might as well move to Germany, somewhere along the border, since Metz was suggested and it's close to the German border, and just go to France whenever you like.

Eurozone unemployment figures hit a new high - latimes.com

5.4% in Germany.

I don't really know much about the OP's major, but it sounds like it's something not many folks major in, so there shouldn't be a flood of job applicants, and you are more likely to get a job and a visa.
