So in this case, some ultra nationalist, the equivalent of a Westerboro Baptists church member, now all of a sudden is the representative for how all Russians act and think. Fact is, there are plenty of gays in the entertainment industry and the gay scene is alive and well in large cities. I assure you if the government was really against gays, there would not be a life size statue of Freddy Mercury on Nevsky.
I just meant on City Data. It seems like there should be a different forum for Russian topics.

But Fred Phelps was never the star of a popular nationally broadcast sitcom.

Putin is probably a closeted gay man, the way he is always targeting gays for hate. There have been rumors for years.

Unfortunately, if you are any type of ethnic, religious, or other type of minority, you will be subject to discrimination in Putin's Russia. Gays need to leave for more accepting parts of the world.

It will only get worse in Russia as the economy collapses, and Putin blames everyone else, from "the West" to "the Jews" to "the Gays".

Actors/celebrities/sport stars everywhere have had their bigot moment in the spotlight, from Mel Gibson's rants about Jews to Tim Hardaway stating he hates gay people.

Think about a progressive country like the US, and how it was even 20 years ago. Now days if a country acted like the US did jsut 20 years ago, they would be screaming "bigots!"

He is not gay, but if he was, how would that matter?

Yet all of these ethnic, religious, and other type of minorities flock to Russia; I guess in Russia these minorities are still treated better than they are by their own people in their own country.

Yea, the constant "when Russia's economy collapses", as if that is the end all of everything and as if it is going to happen. The US economy needed a $1 trillion rescue and the US pulled out just fine, despite millions of job losses and numerous people losing their homes and retirement accounts. Russia went through a much, much worse financial crisis in the 1990's and they pulled out just fine. Economic crisis are not too bad when you are not overloaded with debt, in which Russia is not.

Saying Russia is nicer than Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan or South Ossetia or North Korea isn't really saying much at all.

... as long as they constantly denied who they were, and lied to everyone they met.

Would you want to live your entire life that way?
I don't want to disappoint you but I do not care if you're gay or not. Why do you want to make something that is none of my business - my business? Most people think like I do.

If you're gay so what? Don't shove it in my face. Dpolo has a good point.

It's about freedom of expression. One should be free to be who they want to be and not what society tells them. This is not about allowing mayhem but rather respecting basic human rights. That something Russia and Russians have absolutely no concept of.
