You know, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire Galicia (Ukrainian) economically depressed. It supplied the Empire with a steady supply of cannon fodder - soldiers who had no economic options other than joining the army.

That is correct. Galicia was also the larder of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The people there were kept on the farms under landlords who invested nothing in the populace to enhance their lives or their future. They were serfs and not allowed any upward mobility. The lords taxed them from birth to death using the funds to build palaces and huge houses and living extravagant lifestyles.
Do I see parallels? Many in these times.
The callous disregard for our fellow man though is what will be our greatest burden going forward. The pattern of the US going back decades was to destroy "evil" governments/systems, enslave and control the populations. In 2010 Libya was the richest countries in Africa. Free medical and education for everyone, they built the GMMR and could feed themselves. By the end of 2011 mothers were begging for food in the streets for their starving kids. Slave markets returned.
Iraq. We invaded in 2003. By 2005 mothers were forced to sell themselves in order to buy food. We're still in Iraq and it's still a corrupt cesspool filled with poor destitute people with no future there.
Afghanistan? It's terrible.
If you think Europe has an immigration problem today. You just wait.
