Other than gender identification, there is almost no point in it now that men's underwear can be purchased with the same kind of sheer stretch materials. such as spandex, lycra, etc. that women's panties come in.

The so-called murse is an attractive, functional item and I think it's great. I didn't know it was back in fashion. I bought one for my guy when I was living in Germany a few decades ago. The one I bought looked a bit less purse-like, but not all that dissimilar:
