It’s a question of appropriateness. I’ve had this discussion with my boys, but my daughter has always dressed appropriately according to the circumstances.
My view is that, if the younger generation cares about being appropriate, they should listen to their grandparents, because half the time, their parents are clueless too.
My youngest son is 35. He’s a soldier, and most of his clothing is extremely casual, including shorts, tee shirts and a ball cap. A few times, Ive told him to stop dressing like a 12 year old. At least he owns a few suits, and will dress well for a wedding or funeral. We went with him and his wife and a few of their friends to a nice old guard country club for a lovely brunch. Most of the guests were older and were dressed nicely, including dh and I, but the kids were in holey jeans and other things that I thought were not right. It’s not as if these kids were raised like wolves or anything. At least, my son knows better than to keep his hat on inside. At least I won that battle.
At my sister in law’s funeral it was 17 degrees outside. Her 30 something DIL, wore leggings, a tank top, a cardigan sweater and spike heels. She stuck out like a sore thumb, and people thought she was nuts.
It’s not about you feeling comfortable, it’s about how you present yourself.
Umm.. no. It's all about me being comfortable in what I wear, liking what I wear, and not trying to please the masses. I don't understa d these expected "obligations" for clothes. Why make yourself miserable just for some temporary social acceptance? I can't even stand a crease in my pants. I already have my look people expect me to see, as I refuse to waiver from it.

Thank you.
I will dress how I’m comfortable.
I know what people my age wear. I see what my friends wear all the time.
A few have that “polished” look but they’re also far more girly than I am and have been that way since 8th grade when I met them.
I will say I definitely dress casually but I only ever go to my grandmothers doctor appointments, my doctors appts and the grocery store, or occasionally out shopping for clothes.

I usually wear flip flops if it’s over 65 degrees out.
I have a pair of adidas shoes, black with white stripes and my UGGs, which you’re not supposed to wear socks with because irl wear down the inside lining.
Life with your mentality sounds miserable.
Maybe she wasn’t cold. I run hot.
Believe me, she was not hot, either temperature wise, or otherwise.

This is the crux of it....the basic disagreement. Nobody is asking you to be uncomfortable, that’s a lame argument. Their is comfort and order in certain social conventions, and behavior that is respectful to others.
Let’s just say you are invited to a fancy wedding reception, where everyone is dressed appropriately, except one guy who is only “comfortable” in shorts and a tank top. It’s not respectful to the person who went to the expense and care to make everything special. He is saying, “You are not worth my trouble.”
Same thing as if you and your SO are at an expensive restaurant for your anniversary. Wouldn’t it spoil the experience if the people at the next table looked like they just hopped off the lawnmower?
Is it possible that grandma is objecting OPs grooming, or lack thereof? But I still think that she gets to present herself to the world the way she wants. And Uggs are everywhere now. They should not be surprising to anyone.
I love Uggs. I have multiple pairs but after a while they start to look like bedroom slippers.
Most people don't realize this but Uggs were invented by surfers to be beach shoes not snow shoes. When the surfers got out of the cold Pacific Ocean, they wanted something warm to put on their feet. They are actually perfect up to 83 degrees.

JJill is almost as bad as Chicos. Horrible. I'm 53 and wouldn't be caught dead in either.
A sweater dress with tights or leggings would be good for you to try.
That's basically what I am wearing right now and wear a lot through fall/winter.
It's def. an easy, comfortable and polished look to try if you are looking for something.

I think the Target idea is a great one.
I’m wearing target and old navy today. :P
I’ve got a floral button down, dark skinny jeans and pointy loafer-inspired flats on.

Oh, blueheron! I love JJill. To me, nothing like Cougartown Chico’s. I think their stuff is cute. Maybe because all their pants come in tall.
