Floating ice or sea ice will not raise sea levels when it melts. That science lesson was taught in elementary school when I attended ... many moons ago!

The polar vortex might not be new to some meteorologists but when we started seeing it bring historic cold weather to parts of the US over the past two years the name was new to most in media and obviously the public. We broke many weather records in many areas over the past few years when the weather system that normally resides over the arctic slid down. When the polar vortex shifted away from the arctic it left unusually warm and the ice started melting. Enough ice melted to allow oil drilling platforms to start drilling in the arctic sea for the first time.

Not every one got the message as many believe melting ice in the Arctic will flood much of Americas coastline, obviously you and i attended class that day.

I take it you are referring to the Archimedes principle. If so then the classroom experiment was probably done using fresh water. Do the same experiment with salt water and fresh water ice cube and the level will indeed rise.

Science of water displacement :
Archimedes' principle states that the weight of water displaced will equal the upward buoyancy force provided by that water. In this case.
Ice in a glass of water,
Weight of water displaced=mwater displacedg=ρVg=ρAhg
where V is volume of water displaced, ρ is density of water, A is the surface area of the glass and g is acceleration due to gravity.
Therefore the upward buoyancy force acting on the ice is ρAhg.
Now the downward weight of ice is miceg.
Now because the ice is neither sinking nor floating, these must balance. That is:
ρAhg=miceg
Therefore,
h=miceρA
Now when the ice melts, this height difference due to buoyancy goes to 0. But now an additional mass mice of water has been added to the glass in the form of water. Since mass is conserved, the mass of ice that has melted has been turned into an equivalent mass of water.
The volume of such water added to the glass is:
V=miceρ
and therefore,
Ah=miceρ
So,
h=miceρA

So, the height the water has increased due to the melted ice is exactly the same as the height increase due to buoyancy before the ice had melted.

However, as I always say on these boards, no place is perfect. There are natural disasters all over the world and you can't live in a bubble. Just be prepared and use caution when boating and you'll live a long and happy life in Florida.

We should, however, be concerned about the future and not ignore global warming and its effect on the environment.

Much ice and snow melt every spring in the northern parts of the globe, notice any annual water rise in the oceans every spring.?
