If you tire of snowbirds you would not like the 10 days of bike week we have here. They say 400,000 bikers are in the Daytona Beach area enjoying bike week. In Volusia County we don't have a significant economy outside of tourism. I am glad to see loads of money come into the local economy. I don't think permanent residents would be able to support the number of restaurants and the upscale deli in Publix. I'm hoping locals will support the brewpub that is coming and the new surf shop.

That's not an issue for me, and never has been in the 40 yrs I have lived in FL. Not everyone works in a tourist-related industry.

I long for the days when there was only a snowbird "season". In South Lake County, it seems snowbird "season" is all year long these days. Can't tell the difference from when they're here, and when they're gone now more...

But every industry and profession is effected to some degree by the tourists coming here. Can I ask what you do that you think you aren't?

For me it's mostly a traffic congestion issue.

Healthcare, and I can tell you with the year-round population in FL, there was always enough work to keep us all busy. In fact, we looked forward to the end of snowbird season, as administrations tended to rely on mandatory overtime instead of hiring more folks to cover the added work during the season. They tended to hire a few temp nurses, and in the other departments ( one of which is where I worked) zilch. Later on I worked in a government regulatory capacity, and found the only effect of snowbird season to me was an increase in traffic on the roads, and too many visitors who drove like they had no idea where they were going, and were generally oblivious to anything going on around them. Made it where I dreaded driving in north Broward, Palm Beach and Collier counties in the wintertime.

Now I am retired from those jobs, have pensions, SS and savings, besides some income from a part-time educational consultant job I do from home for a family run business in CA. So my income, again, would be the same with or without snowbirds.

Any other questions?

Agreed! Healthcare is definitely not dependent on tourists or snowbirds. And there will be plenty of future jobs as the population ages and increases (to the tune of 800 - 1000 people/day).

Yeah but that proves Rabflmom's point, your work load was effected by the snowbird bubble, and it effects the healthcare situation to fulltimers who now have to share the finite resources. Although you work from home, do local prices go up "in season"? So, is there a net effect on your income?
