I believe it's a Marcella Hazan recipe originally. I just don't think the brand of tomatoes I used was tasty enough to make a great sauce essentially on its own. (I've never eaten the really fancy schmancy expensive San Marzano tomatoes.) Or maybe I'm just too high maintenance to enjoy something with 3 ingredients.
Now I want some of my regular marinara!!
Debsi, I gotta tell you: I made this sauce last night and it was DELICIOUS. I used the San Marzano tomatoes. I don't know if that's what made the difference (I think "the miracle of butter" was what made it truly outstanding). I just cannot get over how light and fresh-tasting -- and buttery yummy -- this was.
I'm totally hooked on this recipe. Next time I'm going to try to use a little less butter -- just so that it can be a BIT healthier -- but I looooved this sauce.
If you think it was because you didn't use the San Marzano tomatoes, do yourself a favor: Buy the San Marzanos and try it again.
My mouth is watering just remembering it from dinner last night.
Grilled salmon, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans.
