...fill their cups completely full of ice?
Is it so difficult to understand that ice takes up space, and that space (volume) is no longer available to fill with soda?
Not to mention the fact that ice melts, diluting the soda!
The soda coming out of the dispenser is cold, so actually ice isn't really needed anyway, unless, of course, you feel it will take you a very long time to finish your drink.
When I buy soda, whether at a self serve fountain or otherwise, I don't want any ice. I am spending $1 or more for that cup of soda, and I want full value.
I find it ridiculous that somebody sued Starbucks because they felt their latte was an ounce or so short, yet they will fill their cup with ice and get 1/4 the soda they paid for!
I do it because I think soda tastes too strong, too sweet. I do not drink it much but when I do I like the ice to water it down. I do the same when I pour for my kids. That way they can have soda but not too much. Maybe this is faulty logic but it makes me feel better about letting them have it.
I might be an odd duck but SHRUG I'm not hurting anybody or even tying up the line for the machine. Now those people, the super slow, I can't make up my mind which soda I want, drive me nuts!!
Because some people want their drinks "ice cold," which is colder than straight out of the tap. Some people like to crunch on the ice when they're done drinking their soda. And some people don't want an entire cup full of soda because it's loaded with sugar.
It's a personal preference. Not sure why it should bother you when their choice doesn't affect your ability to get your soda the way you like it.
We all like to get our money's worth. Soda may be dispensed cold but doesn't stay cold long in warm climates like ours. In our summers you'd crave ice. I don't like it when the ice melts and dilutes the drink either. Tea is generally dispensed hot or very warm. I don't like weak tea but I do want it cold. It's a trade off of choice. When the drinks are made by the employees they use a lot of ice to save money. Ice is cheaper than product. We have a choice at self dispensing fountains.

What makes you think it "bothers" me?
It doesn't bother me a bit that some (many) people cheat themselves by paying for soda and getting frozen water instead. That is their choice.
I merely expressed curiosity about the issue. No more, no less.
Who knows, perhaps there will be one or two people out there who will say to themselves "I never thought of it that way, maybe I will cut back or eliminate the ice and get more for my money!"
If so, I have performed a public service.
