I love pickles with fried chicken, cut down on the fat.
I don't get why every fried chicken sandwich that is on the market now has pickles on it, but then I don't consider that "real" fried chicken anyway. Maybe your idea of cutting down on the fat is the reason. If I were going to buy a fried chicken sandwich I would have them leave the pickles off for sure. Blech!
Like so many others, I don't use any condiments with fried chicken (and honestly, I didn't know people did that!). But I DO always need LOTS of salt with fried foods* -- which is why I rarely eat them!

*I don't eat much salt with other foods (and I never cook with it -- I've never been able to taste a difference cooking with or without it). Many foods (like pizza or salad), I don't add salt to at all. But fried foods ... <sigh>. Now I'm in the mood for fried chicken ...

I agree with you there. First thing I do is did the pickles off. Now I love a good pickle on the side, but hate them on a chicken sandwich or burger. It's a taste combo that just doesn't work for me.
Perhaps a lot of the problem is so much fried chicken just isn't really well made. Really needs a good long soak in buttermilk, then dredge in seasoned flour before deep frying in hot fat. Should be juicy but not greasy. If the crunch is greasy, it soaked too long in oil that wasn't hot enough. That's one reason I don't do it often at home. Too much hot oil on a small stove.
This is definitely my choice of dipping sauce for fried chicken, but ask any kids, and it will be Ranch dressing.
Depends on the region. In the Midwest, people of all ages put ranch dressing on everything. From garden salad, to chicken nuggets, to roasted potatoes, to pizza.
I personally think good hot sauce is the best and most natural-tasting condiment for fried chicken. I see you are in Chicagoland. Honey Butter is an awesome restaurant in Logan Square, and I checked it out when I visited Chicago. So honey butter is added to my list now!
