For retirees a lot depends on your personal and financial situation if you chose the Tampa Bay area to retire. I wouldn't call Tampa a 'dump' but to live in a nice area it is going to cost you. There are 55+ retirement communities, some close to the beach, in St. Pete and Clearwater. Tampa Bay has a lot of traffic and crime is a problem in most areas. There are a lot of good things about Tampa and I do miss somethings, but I learned a long time ago to 'look for the good because the bad will show up soon enough' I miss going to the beach, seeing the dolphins, the theater and cuban food.

Being a recent widow and then offered early retirement, I was alone in a house with a lot of memories. My daughter and her family moved from Tampa to a small town in N.AL. I decided to move to be closer to them. Sold my house, made enough to buy a house free and clear with 3/4 acre in this small town with very little crime and no traffic. Low property taxes and HOI make living here easy.

Listen to the good folks on here, take the good and bad comments and weigh them to decide if an area is right for you.

You NEED a car to get around here. The bus system takes forever!

Second the bus system taking forever (depending on where you live... the cape, yes, in FM, not so much), but if you are retired, what else you got to do? You will meet some interesting people on the bus . Obviously there are a lot of people moving here. I have to ask, what do you all do for a living? I ask, because I have been contemplating starting a technology firm (I currently work remote for one) and would need to know if there are educated/creative/technical people to hire when it comes to that point.

Interesting is one word for it My office is next to the bus station and while most of the people are really nice and normal, there's just some crazazies that get into the mix. I get some great stories out of them but I wouldn't want to stuck with some of them for an extended amount of time while waiting for my stop. If you do ride the bus, bring a book and/or headphones to distract you.
