Here in Miami, you cannot even rent in the wort and filthiest ghetto of the city and most people (and families) make less than $20k a year. Here minimum wage is $7.25 and most are getting paid that, including me. I have college education and experience and this is the most I can get in this place...
I rent from a relative. That is the only reason I stay in Miami, is the deal I am getting (+ no utilities). Like you said, a ghetto closet would cost $800.00 a month.

Consider yourself lucky my friend Iswish I can rent for that price. Take advantage of paying a cheap rent and save money so you can move somewhere else where you can get pay more and a cheaper cost of living...
Better suburban area, close to shopping/mall/office parks, older complex, south suburban Dayton: $560/mo for a two bedroom, water included. This about right in the middle for rents in the Dayton area.
I know in some older suburbs you can rent half an older double (double house or duplex) for as low as between $400 to $500/mo. But then I saw a furnished 1 bed in the South Park area (a historical district near downtown) for $400/mo, which seemed high...there is a tendancy to jack up the rents if an area is percieved to be somehow "special"..but these areas are not that special! So paying a premium high-range rent just to live in a "historic district" or downtown loft...in Dayton?....I don't think so!
Here in Mesa, AZ we pay $635 for a 1 bdrm, that is very small, but includes utilities, close to freeways and shopping, plus we have great neighbors. Besides the occasional helicopter and swat team searching for someone, its really not that bad until we can afford to buy a house. I am pretty sure I could find something a bit cheaper, but dont feel like moving unless I can save $100 and over, less than that I am not sure it would be worth it. If we could live rent free, so much money would be saved. I have never been a fan of how housing takes such a large chunk of people's incomes.

The Cleveland area has a lot of cheap rents. Not just in "ghetto" areas, but also in decent, older, inner-ring suburbs such as Lakewood... 1-bedrooms for $450-$650, 2-bedrooms for $550-$800, etc. Often heat is included in that price. Area is older but has loads of character and is mostly well-kept and low crime. And convenient to downtown Cleveland.
From what I've heard, Pittsburgh is pretty cheap too. Like Cleveland, you get a low cost of living and access to first-rate big-city cultural amenities.
The neighborhood I live in is packed with students and young professionals...despite the fact that it's not exactly crawling with money, you can expect a studio apartment measuring 10 x 13 feet with a small kitchenette to start at about $1,050/mo. Sure it's a closet, but it's all about the location.
1 BRs will be in the $1,500-1,800 range.
