Cheesecake Factory and some of those other places have looked at Charleston, but with their stringent requirements, they haven't come here. Around here, people get mad because there's only 1 Olive Garden, but it's hard to find a place with all of the requirements that Olive Garden wants to put one in West Ashley or James Island.
Living here in Charleston, there are so many good local places, you could go to a different place for 3-6 months and never get tired of it.
I am not a big fan of chain restaurants, but I am not a food snob either.
Many comments on this thread remind me of when I went to a wine tasting at a friends house. All labels were concealed. We decided to buy a cheap bottle, maybe $5. Guess what wine the snobs selected as wine of the night? You got it, the $5 bottle.
Bottom line is many like to act cultured, but are completely clueless.
so basically everyone hates every chain restaurant
I'm not a huge fan of chain restaurants, but honestly I'm fine eating at them every once in awhile. It's comfort food. It's not like they all serve up garbage like McDonalds or Wendys or something.
Sometime when I'm on lunch with coworkers in Chicago we'll decide to just say screw it and go to a Bennigans. It's greasy and mass produced, but some days you just need some of that.
A place like McCormick and Schmicks is not a traditional mass chain; though may capitalize on some cost synergies. Is tough to compare them to an Applebees or even Cheesecake Factory for example.
With that Premis I could say Buddakan is a very selctive chain with only 3 locations
