I think Canada and Canadian musicians are hotbeds for American music. :P

New Orleans is a huge blues/jazz place still, but Chicago has a bigger scene and just as much history because that's where that music was recorded and distributed.

While Nashville is the home of country music, most country records are produced out of Los Angeles now.

As for rap, Atlanta is probably the 3rd or 4th largest player after NYC, CA, and Chicago (or before Chicago). But the centers of rap are NYC then LA.
NYC a center in rap in 2011?? No way. Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, and Detroit are ahead of NYC at this point. The birthplace of Rap is NYC, but center of rap is Atlanta.

Ey....I'd argue that along with Atlanta; Houston, Bay Area, New Orleans and Miami had a more significant impact on rap than Chicago. As far as the south's contribution to American music; it's pretty much the birthplace of it. As southerns started to spread out across the country; they took their musical talents with them and started all types of music scenes all over the USA.

I'm actually in agreement with this one.

It's pretty interesting how some of the most materially impoverished areas were the birthplaces of such rich cultural legacies.

Yeah,

If I were to post this back in the 90s, then yeah, then it would be different.

NYC is absolutely where it started, and through the 90s, NYC, LA, and to a lesser extent Chicago, Detroit, etc. were the home to rap/hip-hop.

But starting in the late 90s, it would be hard to argue that the scene did take a bit of turn of focus to the southern cities, led of course by Atlanta.

Since almost all forms of "American" music can trace their family tree back to slave songs I would say without a doubt the south has been the most important.

Pretty much. As another poster said, pretty much all forms of American music have roots within the African-American culture, which of course started in the south. Even overseas phenomenons like the Beatles got their inspiration from black artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

Also don't forget Ragtime, which was started by African-American and Texan Scott Joplin.

I would have to say yes. For the most part, every style of american music that i can think of save a few has originated out of the south. Blues, jazz, and rock either came out of or were strongly influenced by the south. And country, which is obviously southern, as well as bluegrass, all came out of the south. One way or another, the south has either created certain styles of music, or put the crucial building blocks in place for these styles of music to be created. African Americans, mostly from the south, and southern whites are largely responsible for much of the music we have today. even today, the southern states are where some of the biggest musical scenes are at. Cities like Austin, Athens (georgia), Memphis, New Orleans, Nashville, etc. the Appalachian south and the deep south during the 20th century was where most of our roots to today's country, blues, jazz, and rock originated.

Rap started in NYC. That alone should KEEP it at number 1 in Hip-Hop.
