The answer is probably no but I was just wondering if any core cities of a particular metro have been overtaken in population by another suburban/satellite city. Are any cities close to being taken over by another city in being the most populous city in that particular metro?
North Port, Florida surpassed both Sarasota and Bradenton in population over the past decade. The metro area, consisting of Sarasota and Manatee counties, has undergone several name changes:
1993: Sarasota MSA and Bradenton MSA combined to form the Sarasota-Bradenton MSA
2003: Addition of Venice as a principal city (Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice MSA)
2007: Bradenton surpasses Sarasota in population (Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice MSA)
2009: North Port designated a principal city (North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota MSA)
Based on the 2010 Census figures, the area might undergo another name change once the MSAs are redefined. North Port is still the largest with a population of 57,357. Sarasota (51,917) is slightly larger than Bradenton (49,546).

So does the news now say North Port's News Leader or does the news go by a regional name?
Charleston, SC has had to annex at an aggresive rate in the past couple of decades to stay ahead of North Charleston, SC. In 1980, Charleston had a population of 69,779 to North Charleston's 62,479. In 2010 North Charleston surpassed Charleston's 2000 population, but the large annexations brought Charleston further ahead than it had been in decades: Charleston, 120,083; North Charleston 97,471 as of 2010 census.
I realize that El Paso is a separate metro area from Ciudad Juarez. But just for fun: If the two cities were located in the same country, they'd both be part of the same metro area. So it's interesting to note that Juarez actually surpassed the city of El Paso in population way back in the 1960's. Is Juarez a suburb of El Paso? Depends on who you ask.
Similarly, San Diego is a separate metro area from Tijuana for the same reason. Tijuana, which is faster-growing than it's American counterpart, is said to have surpassed the city of SD in population early this year.
