According to this link it appears to be Tallahassee.

Top 5 closest capitals:

1) Dover, DE (6.4 miles)
2) Hartford, CT (6.5 miles)
3) Columbia, SC (7.2 miles)
4) Trenton, NJ (10.5 miles)
5) Little Rock, AR (14.1 miles)
Ironically Trenton is right on the state line, with Pennsylvania immediately across the Delaware River from the city. Perhaps it is still near the center because of New Jersey's meandering western boundary as it follows the river.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the geographic regions defined as the "Midwest" and the "Northeast," which are, perhaps, the most similar major geographic regions in the nation, share a mere 92-mile land border along the Ohio-Pennsylvania boundary line (Ellicott's Line).

You can go all the way from Maine to North Carolina without ever not being in an MSA, or from Texas to the Florida panhandle.

If diagonals are valid, you can also get from Missouri to Ohio: start in St. Louis, head northeast through Illinois, and hop from Cass County, MI to Kalamazoo County, MI.

The Connecticut panhandle is part of New England, but it's closer to Philly than to Boston.

That may be true, but that map certainly doesn't prove it. There is no way to travel from Maine to North Carolina, without passing through one of the green counties (MSAs) on that map.

To put things in perspective, Philly is less than 100 miles (only 92 miles to be exact) away from New England (Connecticut panhandle).

The most direct route between these two cities is actually less mileage than the most direct route between Tottenville, Staten Island (NYC city limits) and City Island, Bronx (also NYC city limits).
