No, it's the post office. US-31 goes all the way through Grand Traverse County, street-named US-31. South of downtown, US-31 South is named Division Street only to city limits. Our intersection, though, is in Garfield Township, where county numbering rules take over. Here, in the northern half of the county, the road is numbered as North US-31 South, up to city limits and new numbering conventions. The county also has a US-31 North which runs east from the city to Benzie County, and is called East US-31 North.

When the city expanded to the airport, two new streets were created -- one accessing the north entrance to the airport, and another to the south. South Airport Road became the main east-west arterial south of the city, all the way to where West South Airport Road meets North US-31 South. No other names to call them.

Okay, that makes sense. But I still don't understand, what is unusual about it. US-31 is a North-South highway. Yes, parts of it run east and west, but it is still signed as US-31 North and US-31 South. As far as the grid numbering system goes, that is pretty normal too. Normally streets are numbered on the city grid system to the city limits and then on the county grid system from there.

As far as what names to call it, I posted the images of what the signs say. They show US-31 North, US-31 South, and So Airport Rd. So that means it's the intersection of US-31 and South Airport Road.

As for West South Airport Road, that is not that unusual either. In many places streets have more then one direction on them. For example when I was a kid we lived in a house with the address 106 6th Ave. SE. Our street 6th Ave. SE, became 6th Ave. SW at Main Street. The city limits didn't extend that far north but if it did, there would have been another street named 6th Ave. NE and 6th Ave. NW. Salt Lake City has a lot of examples of that. For example: 100 South West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT. The address being the 100 South block of West Temple (Street). There are also North and South Temple Streets. Another example: 300 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT. The 300 block East of South Temple. And I won't even get started on the numbered streets in Salt Lake City, which get even more complicated. LOL

I have driven thru there many times. There is nothing confusing at all.

Easton, Pennsylvania is just across the river from New Jersey, but the recommended route from Easton to the South Jersey Shore starts you off going west from Easton.

It's possible to sail from the Pacific Ocean to Idaho through the Snake and Columbia Rivers, which will take you to the farthest inland port on the West Coast, called Lewiston.

The state of Minnesota has two ports with different navigable routes to the sea.

I guess it's just interesting to me, but according to Google Maps, to go from Hatteras, NC, to Morehead City, NC, it's faster to drive 4 hrs and 25 min around the Inner Banks than to take a ferry (two, actually, one to Ocracoke, and one to the mainland). The mileage total of the drive is about 231 miles, while the ferry option is 86 miles. The straight-line distance: 67 miles

Ferries are slow, take time to load, and you have to wait for the scheduled departure time. For that one, they only run six times a day. So long waits, up to 15 hours.

Among the 100 largest US cities in geographical area, Casa Grande, Arizona is 0.00% water. According to Wikipedia, all of the city’s 110.63 square miles consists solely of land.
Note: the same percentage of water is also attributed to Lawton, Oklahoma; however, Google Maps shows a few lakes and creeks located within Lawton’s city limits.
