The NE is all built out and burned out. Finance is last century and has been a failure for most of the present century . Today, people are investing overseas while looking toward the Western US and the Pacific Rim. Europe? Old and washed up (See the EURO).

The Erie Canal is so overblown. That represents the last vestige of a two century old technology (at that time) that was labor, engineering, and maintenance intensive. Within a few years, railroads would take the place of canals as transportation routes and become the dominant form of transport for the rest of the century and the first half of the next.

This whole thread is just another glaring example of how dis-unified and segregated this country has become. The writing is on the wall. This country will not exist in 50 years time and will have broken apart.

Yes, but what city that capitalized on later modes of transport ever supplanted the city that capitalized on the Erie Canal most significantly, New York City?

Easily, the South.

If not for our natural gas and oil and Gulf resources, the northeast would freeze in the dark. We have the cotton, to boot. The South could survive without the rest of the nation, but it would be hard for the other parts to survive without the South.

Also? The Second Amendment means something down here. We own guns, know how to use them, and will defend the Constitution WITH them...get the drift?

And will also defend any enroachment on our rights...just as did our Confederate great-grandfathers....

Hopefully it wont happen....but if it does? We won't lose, if a next time ever comes...
