Yeah, done the Atlanta-Seattle thing to, and I like Atlanta better. Not to mention reasonably priced.
Looked at your profile, did you like Boston or Providence? For some reason, Providence seems like it would be livable, not horribly priced, and close to some cool things.
Providence is really a great city, and its proximity to Boston is great. If you were to take a little bit of the best things about a big city and put them in a small city you would have Providence and the short drive to Newport is an extremely big plus...so beautiful.

My two favorites are where I split my time: Miami Beach and Raleigh. My job allows me to be where I want to be and I choose both places for different reasons.
I've lived in Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore, San Diego, and Birmingham. I'm just going to out and rank them.
1. San Diego.
2. Birmingham
3. Baltimore
4. Chicago
5. Cleveland
The surprise in this list is Birmingham at #2. But it's actually a great mid-sized town that is very graceful and has almost all the amenities of the other four. Heck, the place even has three or four Beard finalist restaurants every year and a really good music scene. Just as importantly, it's a highly livable city, something that became far more important once I got into my thirties. A couple of times a year, I get a call from a headhunter wanting me to move to Atlanta or Charlotte or St. Louis. I travel there, take the interview, look carefully at the quality of life and the cost of living, and then politely turn them down.
To be sure, when my last child graduates high school, I'll likely move. But not to a major metro area, more like a mid-sized place with warmer winters by the ocean where I can sail my boat.
Chicago. That's easy enough - since I've only lived in one major city and only for a few weeks.
No wait - I lived in Seattle for a short while as a child - but it wasn't a major city yet. Does that count??? I loved the way you could see Mount Ranier from my schoolyard.
