First of all, there are no right or wrong answers here. So feel free to give your opinion and any thoughts.
When you think of cities with lots of soul, what cities come to your mind? For example, some people would maybe say that New Orleans, San Francisco, and Boston are 3 cities with lots of soul.
When you think of cities with less soul, what cities come to your mind? For example, some people would maybe say that Washington, D.C., Charlotte, and Miami are 3 cities with less soul.
Phoenix, soulless. The transient nature is one factor, but hard to quantify why. The politics? The sprawl? The heat that just overwhelms? Not sure, but just lack of heart/soul, whatever you call it. And, an overall level of anger/lack of humanity. Sure the real estate bust didn't help, seemed to exacerbate the anger.
St. Louis, Philly, Baltimore and Chicago has tons of soul. Charlotte, Raleigh, Orlando and Nashville had none.
I think there's some confusion between the term "soul" and "attitude". Philly is more about attitude in my opinion and Detroit deserves the mention for "soul" in it's place as well as Boston and NYC. I completely agree with your lacking list.

With DC and Charlotte in particular, I'd say those cities indeed do have soul--particularly as far as the native Black population goes-- but newer development and a large influx of transplants have relegated it to areas outside of the urban core.
When I think about cities with "soul," Memphis comes to mind first and foremost for me. After all, the city is home to the Rock and Soul Museum. Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum - Memphis, TN

No, I think you just confused more people than were before. What other cities are "attitude" so we can get a better picture?
Soul= Philly, New Orleans, Boston, Montreal, Savannah, NYC, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis
Less Soul= Phoenix, Orlando, Charlotte, OKC, DC in many ways, Denver
I've never been to Nashville but surprised to see it mentioned. A city with so music must have soul.
This. Not sure how Nashville can be seen as having no soul.
Unless the normal CD "East Coast an West Coast and Midwest cities are good and southern cities except New Orleans have no culture." bias is at work.
