Y4es, certain ethnic groups make the core northeastern states from Maryland to Connecticut to Maine. They all share culture that is very different from Virginia on down which shares the "goold ol' boy" culture.

But, MD doesn't share the same percentages of those ethnic groups the same way the actual NE states do.

I would more appeal to MD's politics if I wanted to show how non-Southern it was. Ethnic groups, meh.

I have been to MD, NJ, VA, SC, and NY. MD is very, very very Northern. No question about it. I know many wish to be something they are not.

Pretty sure the people in Maryland consider themselves northern (%-wise) and it's outsiders attaching "southern" to it - I don't believe this is a case of people from Maryland "wishing they were southern" at all.

In the Baltimore forum itself there was a poll about whether it was a northern or southern city. Southern won. Not by much, but clearly enough people thought it was. Unless there was some conspiracy made up by BajanYankee to get many non-MD people there to vote it Southern. You could only vote once in that poll, too.

MD seems split on the issue. I wouldn't say there is a consensus even among Marylanders. Some DO want to be Southern.

Hey look, I'm gonna use the ethnic group argument as an appeal to Honville's Southern character.

Baltimore is mostly Black, therefore Southern.

See why this ethnic group argument makes little sense?

You started the thread though. People from Maryland know they aren't southern; this isn't Dixie. Yes, there are some posters on this forum that are on a "Maryland is southern" campaign, but that is a small percentage compared to the millions of people saying otherwise. I personally think the south is a better region that the northeast, but I know that I don't live in the south.

I started the thread to prove how faulty of an argument it is.

Yes.

For whatever reason I associate Italian-Americans and Jewish-Americans with the Northeast.
