From an international perspective people will probably say NYC. California to some is only L.A.( Hollywood ) and S.F. so they would think it cool I suppose, not knowing the not so nice places in California.

...Napa also holds its own weight, just due to wine alone. Otherwise very true. A lot of family and friends from abroad end up falling in love with Long Beach when I take them around my favorite spots...a city they had never even heard of.

Napa and Sonoma are lovely, but most people outside of US and Canada know very little about them if at all.
...maybe some frightened wine makers in France have heard of them as well LOL

I guess if you are not an avid wine drinker, there's very little reason to have heard about them. I work within a high tourism area of Anaheim though (close to Disney) and upon conversation with travelers, many of them mention wanting to take a trip up north to visit San Francisco AND Napa. So it isn't exactly an obscure place either.
Wrong. The average working class family in America isn't making nearly enough to travel. Especially Californians. Not to mention we aren't given the generous time off vacations some foreigners have.
Wrong again. New Yorkers are renowned pretty much anywhere below the mason dixon for being unaware and ignorant toward various cultures and customs of the different states and for being rude. They refuse to assimilate and bring their tri-state attitude to the south where they have repeatedly clashed with locals. I don't know where you're getting your information from.[
Why is he wrong? He was talking from experience, whilst you just stated stereotypes as if they were facts.
To answer the OP, when I've traveled abroad and am asked where in the U.S. I'm from, I get all sorts of very interested questions when I tell them Colorado. Even though I don't live there anymore, Colorado always gets a good discussion going.

Are these tourists from Europe or anyplace other than Canada and the US?
