Sigh.

The South still has poor health and educational outcomes and low upward mobility. Businesses move south because anti-worker laws and tax structure favors corporations. It’s the same reason manufacturing moves to the developing world. Enjoy winning the race to the bottom.

Major southern cities are becoming more and more liberal, but the backwaters still control the state government, and will continue to gerrymander to keep political power away from the areas that pay the bills. I’d definitely call that backwards.

As someone originally from 'up North,' I agree with this. Many of Atlanta's nice and not so nice suburbs have become veritable U.N.'s., and we all benefit from the culture, markets & restaurants as a result.

There is a racial comfort level here that is possibly the best in the States...

The suburb of Clarkston is a refuge gateway: http://www.clarkstonga.gov/about/clarkston-facts.html

Sounds exactly like how Harrisburg treats Philly & Pittsburgh. You know, how nothing outside of 'Pennsyltucky' matters? And there's no race to the bottom any longer, it was reached a few years ago.

The South continues to gain stature, no matter how many continue to dismiss it.

East Buffalo still has solid or intact neighborhoods like Hamlin Park, Kensington Heights and even University Heights in the NE corner and even Schiller Park that could improve or be revitalized. As OyCrumbler mentioned, the area around the Central Terminal/Polonia/the Broadway Market and Corridor, as well as around Michigan Avenue(the original center of the city’s Black community) have great potential and a project like this could possibly benefit that area of town.

Some may say that Niagara Falls could be another city in that area that could benefit, especially given that it is on an International border and has plenty of room around Downtown. Actually, a location like Main Street in between the tourist portion of Downtown and the nice old money DeVeaux neighborhood has the bones, but could definitely use the investment.

No it is the liberals in the north and the far west who don't understand economics and end up HURTING the people they claim they want to help. They chase away their low skilled work, they bid up their cost of living through taxation and regulation, the soft bigotry of having extremely low expectations for minority groups. Shuffling them off into projects living their entire lives off the government, killing their self worth keeping them segregated from the whites and Asians in the suburbs. It is THAT logic that is backwards. Remember when NY, CA, CT, NJ, IL, etc accumulated most of their wealth they were much like FL, GA, TX, TN, AZ, etc are today. Very business friendly, low taxed, low reg, low cost of living. It was through the growth of government that they are squandering their wealth today.

Are you saying that Black people in those regions just live in the inner city or that there aren’t areas in those regions where all of those groups live near each other?

To be honest, the government gets you one way or another, as manufacturing employment in this country peaked in June of 1979. So, there is plenty of blame to go around.

You are absolutely right, what I think doesn't matter.

As I clearly stated thou The South has a reputation FAIRLY OR NOT, of being considered red-neck territory. Whether it should be viewed as red-neck is irrelevant, the reality is that it is perceived by most Americans as being such and perception matters. Amazon may not want to go to The South because it may be perceived as being supportive of less progressive attitudes and laws that The South is associated with.

Is that faire? Probably not but we don't live in a fair world.

Go ahead and continue to think that while the South takes away all the auto manufacturing plants that the north used to have. There are reasons why companies like Mercedes Benz are expanding their already large plants in Alabama.

The South is already more racially integrated than the North. Atlanta is the capital of Black America as it has the largest black middle and upper class in the country. Only DC rivals it.

The South may have had a tumultuous past but it's the place to be. This is evidenced by the thousands of northerners that move south each year to seek a better life for their family.

As far as political views, VA, NC, and FL are tending blue and TX & GA is getting bluer and bluer. Did you know Hillary Clinton got closer in GA than she did in Iowa? The fact is that old manufacturing states like WI, MI , and PA are getting redder while southern states are getting bluer. Just look at PA and how much it has changed.

The "swap" will happen in the South and maybe Bezos wants to be there when it does?

Let's add some context here, shall we?

1. The vast majority of out-migration from the North is simply for economic and/or COL reasons, not because the South is inherently better. In particular, if you score a good paying job, I and many others personally find that the quality-of-life that metros like Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, DC and Chicago offer is second to none.

2. States like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are still fundamentally blue-leaning states (keep in mind that Trump didn't even reach 50% in these states, only a very narrow plurality) and will also continue to trend "blue" like the rest of the country due to demographic shifts. The 2016 election (and the continuously unfortunate consequences) was an anomaly for many reasons.

3. The South, just like the North did before it, will continue to "mature" with declining growth rates. An aging population, declining birth rate, shifting industry trends, and climate change will guarantee it.

Overall, the notion that the South is somehow immune from challenges/headwinds and is destined for perpetual prosperity is incredibly naive and ignorant of history of inevitable "booms" and "busts."

When did I say it was immune to booms and busts?

Right now Louisiana is going through a bust phase and just lost population because the whole state is basically tied to the price of oil due to the offshore rigs and refineries. MS has been in decline for a while, whereas AR is booming because of the largest company in the world Walmart (NW AR), AL is booming due to car manufacturing, GA is booming because of Hartsfield and being the capital of the New South, NC & SC are booming because of transplants from the Northeast, FL is still booming because of retirees, and VA is booming because of the northern VA suburbs. TX is booming because of a strong tech sector in Austin, logistics hub in DFW, military bases in SA, and a medical complex in Houston. Normally Houston is also booming but because of the low price of oil and Harvey, it's going through a contraction right now.

These cycles will continue, I never said they won't.
