The only East/West comparison that works for me is Boston/SF

Chicago = Los Angeles (large; urban downtown, but the majority live in suburbs; more socially moderate the NYC and SF)
Agree w/ everything but not social aspects. Both Chicago & LA are union-strong & democratic [15 seats on the LA city council - 1 Republican, 1 Green 13 Democrats]. I'm not sure if there are cultural similarities. Chicago seems more european/white w/ notable black & hispanic communities. Los Angeles is hugely diverse w/ hispanic majority among every asian nationality. Anglos are the powerful money but outnumbered.

Believe both cities are heavily catholic but LA more likely Buddhist than Chicago. Lifestyles are also different due to climate. LA nightlife\ Hollywood more like New York\ Miami.

You won't see the homeless, panhandling and drug usage in Prov like Portland. In Oregon you will see it on every street corner. .
A little harsh on Portland, eh? The crime isn't that much of a problem in Portland, except perhaps in the Northeast. And saying that panhandling and homelessness is on every corner in Oregon is also a gross misrepresentation for the state as Portland and Eugene are where you're most likely to see it, though still not on every street corner.

But this is all off topic now... I apologize... I know that myself and another poster were simply making a point that Providence is to Boston as Portland is to Seattle or SF. Obviously there are huge specific differences, but how the various cities operate within the context of their respective coasts is what I was looking at.

Seattle?

I'm really curious what people would say. Sure, it's not going to be exact. Just opinions for fun. Feel free to include midwest cities if you feel like it
I'd do...

Baltimore - Oakland
Miami - Los Angeles
Tampa or Fort Lauderdale - San Diego
Atlantic City - Las Vegas (obviously!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!)

Raleigh - San Jose (Research Triangle vs. Silicon Valley)
Boston - San Francisco
Boston - Seattle

Portland, Maine - Portland, Oregon (I think justcoulnd't avoid that!!!)

NYC can't really be paired with anything

Cleveland, Detroit, Newark, and Philadelphia can also be paired with Oakland.

Detroit can also be paired with Compton

Orlando and Anaheim, CA is also another obvious match.

I think Miami-LA makes more sense. High immigrant population, predominantly Spanish speaking and a major fashion and entertainment industry and a beach culture.

How is New Orleans like Las Vegas? Especially when there's Atlantic City to compare with. New Orleans is not East Coast, and its such a unique place that can't be matched with anyplace else.

I'd also match Sedona, Arizona and Asheville, North Carolina.

They both are the only cities in America where you can buy alcohol 24/7 and have open containers of it on public streets. Both big party and convention destinations. But besides that they really have little in common, New Orleans has so much history and a unique culture it really is a one of a kind city.
