NY state is so diverse. There's a night and day difference between southern NY and northern NY. Not so much with the weather (though it's generally like 10-15 degrees warmer here in southern NY), but the culture is way different. Kind of like how north FL and south Fl are so diverse. Don't really have that with Illinois.

Similar accents maybe, at least west of Syracuse. But otherwise the Appalachian culture in New York is only a couple steps removed from that of WV.
Huh? Where did you get that from? There isn't anything that is similar to Wv in NY. If you are going by a map that stated that the Southern Tier is a part of Appalachia, it is only that way in terms of topography. Trust me, it's not even close. I don't think Appalachia when I go to Ithaca, Elmira, Corning, Binghamton or in regards to other communities in the Southern Tier of NY.
I lived in the Chicago area and loved it, except for my daily commute.
Lived in NJ for 10 years, not NY.
My preference would be NY as long as it would not be NYC. Since it would be close to family.
Both states are tax hells though in regard to property and sales taxes though.

Haha I'm gonna have to agree with you, there is a huge difference between Chicagoland and downstate.

North IL and Southern IL culture are WAY different. Northern IL is highly industrailaized and the people who live there reflect the cultures of the Great Lakes areas of the country, + many more recent immigrants from other parts of the world. Southern IL is much more southern in ancestry and religion and its economy is dominated not by industry, but by agriculture (including cotton farming!), with some remnants of the coal industry. You could even make an arguement that Central IL is different from the other 2 regions.
Oh, stop it. Upstate NY is much more urbanized, has several cities bigger than WV's biggest, has a greater diversity of population, better educational institutions, etc.

Being originally from NY, MI reminds me of NY, too. And so does WI.
