I've been all over the east. I've also been all over the west. i've lived on both coasts. Anything the east does, the west does better, bigger, and more beautifully. Perhaps this is why the west has nearly a hundred national parks and the east has only 7. Have YOU been to CO, NM, UT, CA, OR, WA. Have you seen Yosemite Falls? Have you been down into the Grand Canyon? Have you hiked the Rocky Mountains? Have you walked on the Oregon beaches? Seen the Redwoods? Perhaps you could name a feature (maybe two) in the east that is as beautiful as these places. I assure you, the Bluegrass country is not.
Ummm, the West is rather dead. I like my greenery. And how is the West better than the rest of the country? That's rather funny.....
Bluegrass country is mainly referring to the Central part of KY. You know, beautiful horse farms everywhere.
Ok, to all those who replied to my post regarding the scenic character of the west in comparison to the east. I'd like to clarify a few things. I would never claim that the east has NO beauty. That would be ridiculous. My claim was that it is lacking. The beauty in the east is not particularly spectacular. Sure, you can find nice places everywhere. Like the pictures that were posted of KY bluegrass. It's nice. But it's not spectacular. I could find pictures like that of SO many places that it really doesn't surprise me that it looks this way.
Now, there are some nice places in the east. The Appalachians are great. But they're nowhere near as spectacular as the Rockies, Sierras, or Cascades. They can be nice, but the view of Mt. Rainier from Seattle alone is far more spectacular.
As far as the west being dead, I don't quite understand your point. Sure, on average the west is drier. But the Pacific Northwest is just as green (perhaps greener) than much of the east, and views of the Columbia River gorge are as lush as any view of vermont. But again, my point is reinforced here. The west has BOTH green areas and and drier areas.
Once again, I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to claim that NO scenic beauty exists in the east. I'm simply claiming it's beauty of a lesser quality than that found in the west. For EVERY feature you show me in the east, I can show you a similar feature in the west that's more spectacular.
Washington State, specifically on the Eastern side we have an excellent Mediterranian like summer which is going on right now, hot as in up to 100F, but not uber-hot as in 117 like Phoenix, dry, cools off at night, fairly uncrowded, no State Income Tax, good outdoor recreation opportunities, including good bird hunting, steelhead fishing, salmon fishing, decent deer hunting, some good mountain roads, a variety of forest and steppe environments within a reasonable drive, tolerable cost of living.
I lived in New Mexico for over 17 years and visited just about every state you've listed here. After living in Tennessee for two years, I can assure you that beauty is not confined to the western half of the country.
I live in Wisconsin and I love the abundance of beauty. I think its funny how when someone mentions Wisconsin they think either Milwaukee or a dairy farm on flat piece of land. Don't get me wrong Milwaukee is nice, the city has really changed for the better in the last 20 years. The dairy farm picture, well we have lots of them. We also have lots of dairy farms nestled into rolling hills. Wisconsin is so much more than cows and beer.
We have the soul cleansing northwoods with cyrstal clear lakes. We have 500' foot bluffs that allow for you to see for miles and miles. We have moraines that edge the vast great lakes. We have the bluffs that drop to the great lakes. We have door county aka the Cape Cod of the Midwest. Wisconsin and the rest of the midwest offer so many different style landscapes it's not even funny.
I assure you that you're wrong, see below from Lexington, KY.
