If you have to live in the midwest then Minneapolis is the place to be. Even though its midwestern it does not have the same feel as a crap whole like Milwaukee or Cleveland. Minneapolis to me seems alot more progressive, independent minded and clean.
Personally, I think there is this aura surrounding Minneapolis being in Minnesota and the whole Al Franken thing. I have noticed that all the hard core libs on this site voted for Minneapolis probably for that reason. Is Minneapolis nice? Sure. Is it nicer than St Louis, Columbus, Cincinati or Indianapolis? No, having visited all of them, it is not.
Actually the "whole Al Franken thing" and Minnesota's wierd politics is a turn off but I still voted for Minneapolis anyway. The city looks clean and beautiful in most pictures I seen. Plus there is the North Woods and lakes not too far away to the North.

Milwaukee doesn't seem to get talked about much for how big it is...seems to be in the shadow of Chicago. I know it only for the Milwaukee Bucks and Harley Davidson Motorcycles!
How does it compare to Minneapolis in your experience?
Well, I've never been to Minneapolis, just heard good things about the place from people who call it home, people I like and respect. Minneapolis appears to be much more cosmopolitan and progressive than Milwaukee.
Milwaukee still a blue-collar town, but much good about it. Beautiful lakefront, well-built and really nice homes, probably the best parks of any other city I've seen. People are generally nice and down-to-earth. Clean city too with very comfortable suburbs like Shorewood, Wauwatosa, and Elm Grove. Great schools (Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, MSOE, Alverno).
But taxes are high, and there's a great degree of segregation. The north side is the inner city and crime-ridden. People here seem to come from another time. The south side is very racist. Town is slow to change, and slow-moving. Proximity to Chicago means nothing as the two cities are worlds apart. Nice place to visit, but I did my time there. No more. I would try something new and that's Minneapolis where I also have family.
Personally, as a total package I think the Twin Cities are nice (except for the weather), but I think a lot of people here seem to like it "just because".

Have you actually ever been to Minneapolis or Milwaukee? I greatly doubt that you have or I guarantee you wouldn't describe Milwaukee as a "crap hole" if you had. Being that you are Canadian, I'm sure you prefer Minneapolis because feels more like a Canadian city than an American city. You know, frigid cold temperatures, impeccably clean streets, and an incredibly small minority population for a city its size. Minneapolis is basically a wealthy enclave for yuppies from all over the Midwest. It's been gentrified to the nth degree. Cities like Denver, Seattle, and Minneapolis are beautiful no doubt, but that perfection was achieved at the expense of destroying each city's unique essence and character. No thanks, I prefer the grit and grime that generally accompanies life in a real big city.

First of all, you are admitting having never been to Minneapolis, but you're going to say that it's more "cosmopolitan" and "progressive" than Milwaukee. Based on what? Cosmopolitan means "composed of people or elements from many different countries or cultures." Going by that definition, how can a city that is 65% white, like Minneapolis, be considered cosmopolitan?
As far as being more progressive than Milwaukee, how many Socialists has Minneapolis or St. Paul elected to the office of mayor? Milwaukee has had four Socialist mayors. The governor of Minnesota is a Republican, Tim Pawlenty. Wisconsin has Jim Doyle for our governor, a Democrat. Al Franken was involved in an extremely close race, which has yet to be resolved, against incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman. Meanwhile, Wisconsin has Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, both Democrats. Also, one of the craziest politicians I have heard or seen in a long time, Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachman, represents a number of the Twin Cities northern suburban areas. I'm not saying Minnesotans are more conservative than Wisconsinites, I'm just that they're not more liberal either.
Detroit. Not as bad as everyone thinks, lots to do, cultural diversity, great restaurants, arts/museums.
