I've felt comfortable in the northeast, most of the midwest, west, central america and Canada. The only place I felt uncomfortable in was bible belt areas in the southeast and midwest. Being around overly religious people makes me very uneasy.
More comfortable in the NE because I prefer the 4 Seasons and all activites associated with Fall and Winter. I miss snow. I miss mountains. I miss being in a multi-generational culture. I miss being near a big city. And I miss being near my family.

I know exactly what you mean! Even on a smaller scale like having dinner at someone's house and they stop to prey out of nowhere before their meal.

that is freaky. i think mentioned this before, but i'll tell it again. i was riding in a cab and having a conversation with the cab driver. i usually don't, but she seemed nice. well she suddenly started quoting scriptures
and went on and on about the power of the lord. i said "this is my stop!!"
and got the hell outta there! and caught another cab...

That is creepy. I wish people could keep their religion/beliefs private. I would have been out of the cab also..not even sure I would have stopped to pay her.
I've lived in the states of NY, MD, and Tennessee plus 3 years in DC.
My opinion is you'll always be most comfortable moving to the same type of location (urban, suburban, rural) that you are used to. For example, a move from the Bronx to a small town on the eastern end of Long Island is initially more traumatic than moving from Manhattan to Atlanta or moving from suburban Long Island to suburban Maryland or suburban Tennessee.
If you are looking to move out of state and you are looking for a change of pace from a big city, I would recommend a smaller city in the new state, not suburbia or small town/rural area. You still might find it hard to adjust but I think it will be even harder to adjust if in addition to the state, you change location types.

Where in the midwest and west did you live? I live in SE FL and hate it; I just moved here to take care of my parents and now it's time for a change. I've also lived in NJ (as a kid and go back every summer for reunions) & OKC, OK. I really liked the friendly people and slower way of life, but don't want to move back there.
