Do you feel like you don't fit in your home state? (rent, college)

I have lived in Jackson, Mississippi my whole life and have never felt like I shared the same goals, hobbies, and likings as those who live around me.

There is a lot of good in my home state but the bad outweighs the good substantially IMO. People here seem very unmotivated, close-minded, and not very health conscious.

So I guess my question boils down to this...

Do you feel as though the attitudes, lifestyles, and over all demeanor in your home state make you feel like you didn't fit in or belong there??

Any input is appreicated.

Absolutely. Especially for the city and it's surrounding burbs. I definitely think I'd rather be around more educated, open minded and progressive people. I'd even settle for people who can read.

I feel like I fit here in NJ a little too perfectly. I feel that inside me is an L.A. or Vegas guy who wants to come out. Then again, the reality is probably that I'm just a guido who feels at home in any of these places.

i live in dayton, OH...have lived here for 14 yrs and ready to get out. I have never felt at home here for some reason. I really hate winter...and a lot of people like it. I hate it because I love being outside doing whatever, I love being able to go outside comfortably whenever I want. Also, I have very few common interests with many people around here. I like to travel w/ my fiance, I don't drink much, I am co-owner of my own business, etc... Once we get some money, I am planning on moving to northern california or somewhere else westerly.

I feel at home in Illinois , but more with Chicagoland. A lot of us don't even visit downstate and like worlds apart.

I agree with you on the unmotivated factor. I used to have a strong affinity for my home state, but after going to college out of state, I'm beginning to question what place I have here.

The main thing I can't stand is the evangelical culture: anti-science, anti-diversity, close minded, redneck....

No. I feel like I fit in here. Infact I moved away for a few years, and realized I fit in here more than I realized.

A lot of people no matter where they are from have the traveling jones. Sometimes it's curiosity, sometimes their personalities just don't suit their locale. I certainly was one of those. Growing up in Albany Ny & springfield MA, I always felt there must be more to life out there somewhere, something better somewhere. I felt life there was dull or dreary at best. I just didn't feel like I fit in with the local culture.

So one very cold winter day I had enough and just got on a plane and flew to Miami FL. I had always thought there must be something better somewhere, and boy was I ever right! Shining beaches gorgeous women (who were actually nice!) all for $150 per month rent beachside. That was the day my life began, the day I took that plane to South Florida. All everyone ever told me about how wondeful Albany/SPFLD was and how bad the rest of the world was was a huge lie.

JXNDean - if you feel like your small town is not for you, you're probably right. My suggestion is do what I did. Pack a bag and blaze out to whatever city or cities seem to most interest you. You can always go back, but you'll only regret not trying if you don't.

Well, I fit in when I was younger, but, over the past 30 years it's been taken over by ******* Communist freakazoid carpetbaggers, colonists from Communist Red China and illegal aliens, so, now I don't fit in.
