I went to the U.S. last summer for first time. Spent the most time in Atlanta, which is predominantly African American. However, 99% of the tourists on the airport have been ''non-black''. I just wonder why?
I truly hope you're not basing your assessment on what you've seen at the airport. For the record, Atlanta's airport is the busiest in the world and is where a lot of connecting flights take place. I'd probably say that at least 80% of the people you saw don't even live in Atlanta.

Seriously, that's a stereotype. Plenty of us, myself included, travel. Given that the economy is a bit crappy right now, traveling is becoming ridiculously expensive, and Atlanta has an expansive airport, it could also be inferred that some of us are playing it smart right now.

There is economic disparity in the USA between blacks and whites. Travel requires two things: Money and free time. Whites have more money, whites have more jobs that offer paid vacations. There are plenty of blacks traveling, but you don't see them at airports. You see them at bus stations.
That's a great article. Pretty accurate too. Particularly important is the fact that we live in a pretty big country that has all sorts of diversity (people, landscapes, etc.) and we are more likely to drive as we are to fly to our destinations.

Plenty of Blacks fly, and plenty (more) of us drive as well. I'm Black and while I know there are some that do, I don't personally know anyone who primarily travels by bus when going out of town. Driving is by far the number one option, and flying is second.

African-Americans do travel by plane, but ---and I'm basing this on what I've seen with my own eyes only, so no real insight--- my guess is that many go Greyhound, take the bus to travel domestically. It's usually, not always, cheaper than air travel.

@ Colts: LOL. That's true, the people there said that it's getting more expensive to travel before let's say five or ten years.
@ Ron.: That was a great article. I was shocked that some Americans even don't have a passport. I met a guy in his late 40's and so far he has only been to Brazil, but then he began to name all the cities and national parks he visited in the U.S. Many Europeans don't realise that USA is that huge. However (do Americans say however, or it's only British thing?), I don't agree that the U.S. diversity can't compete with that European one. Especially when you compare NYC to London. According to Wikipedia, there is 170 languages spoken in NYC and 300 languages in London.

Well, Atlanta and Charleston have large Black populations. And I'm in Atlanta several times a year, and I've regularly seen Blacks downtown in the "touristy" areas (Centennial Park, GA Aquarium, World of Coke, etc.), although you're going to see more of us in the Auburn Ave district, at the King Center, etc. Same with Charleston; you're not going to see a lot of us strolling along lower King Street, but check out the Gullah tours and some of things away from the beaten path, and you'll see more of us. Can't really speak for Austin or San Antonio.
