Anybody have experience with the greater Carrollton area? I see that it is 45 miles west of Atlanta and would appear to be somewhat diverse in population if you believe what wikipedia prints. I have a job interview there and am considering the area, but have the usual hesitations one might have about non-metro Georgia. My family is mixed and I don't know how that will be received there.

I appreciate any thoughts and comments.

Cheers,
PMMD

Carrollton has stuff to do but the area around it is pretty rural. I think that its diversity would only be limited to black and white

Thanks. How long does it take to get to Atlanta? My recruiter is telling me it's only 35 miles and about 45 minutes. Is that right? Also, would anybody happen to know which communities would be good to look for real estate? I've heard Oak Mountain Golf Course has nice, newer houses. Any such neighborhoods good for kids?

Just remember that there is big different between city of Atlanta and the rest of Georgia. The city of Atlanta is city that just happen located in the south, not a southern city (i.e. the city of atlanta is very liberal, but the rest of Georgia is very conservative).

Definitely good to know. I live in Jacksonville, FL, which is somewhat like ATL in that it is a city with a more cosmopolitan demeanor than much of the South. Do you mean to say that Carrollton is backwards? Would I or my family have difficulty there as we are of mixed ethnicity?

Cannot comment on Carrollton, GA since I never have been there.

By the way, I used to live in Tampa, FL.

Why don't you just visit the place? I drove from Tampa to Atlanta for college football games many times. Nothing like seeing the place.

carrollton is probably a 50 minute drive to Atlanta. It's so far away I don't how the city is even growing.

Am sitting in Carrollton as I type this, awaiting the interview/site tour in the morning. Like you said, there is nothing like seeing a place first-hand. Guess we'll see what we see.

I want to comment since I am from Carrollton. Carrollton, surprisingly, is a good community for interracial families. I am white, and my husband is black, and we have a son. We feel very comfortable living here. We know a lot of other interracial families as well. Interracial relationships are not accepted by everyone, but that's the case for almost everywhere that we have been. There are some very rural communities immediately surrounding Carrollton, but it is still not that bad. Carrollton has a small university, which seems to allow the town to be more liberal than other similar cities.
