What about Roswell? Is it nice I have a 5 yr old son and I've got my degree in early childhood studies (so basically I can be a preschool teacher) Is that a good area? Im thinking about moving due to Detroit as really nothing going on but lost jobs.

Just reviewed this thread. I hope no one else doing so expects to find anything resembling reality here.

btw Valdosta is SOUTH GA. Valdosta is one of the few places that can live up to its Chamber of commerce hype.
Trade and services center, educationl, armed forces (AFB), retirees, not the perfect town but genuinely friendly (per recommendations from my son who coached soccer, went to school, lived there). My read is that as Florida continues to have environmental challenges ie cost of living, good drinking water, etc, more retirees will continue to stop at the border... Valdosta, Dothan AL, etc. Smart moves.

Totally disagree about Hiawassee though. It used to be a great place to live until half of Florida decided to invade it. Lots of resentment towards Floridians in North Georgia or "Floridiots" as there refered as.

Default Delta is ready

Not so simple. When you have older parents in nursing homes.....disabled spouses......and children at home...plus being broke......It is not so easy to take to the road or the air. Must be nice to just fly away from stupid people.
I wouldn't know. I have always had to battle them.

Hey Txgal33 - don't know if you've ever been to the ATL burbs, but the congestion there is as bad or worse than the city. Great if you don't mind strip shopping centers everywhere, cookie-cutter subdivisions and really shallow people. My motto for north Fulton Co. is "where the universe can revolve around you, too!" Takes me 20-45 minutes to drive 5 miles to work. I loved living in the city, esp. Loring Heights and Virginia-Highland, but y'all can keep these burbs!!!

lived in Atlanta central city during the late 1960's and early 1970's; Tech and job at Peachtree Center. Didn't know how good it was. Yes traffic and drugs were increasing. Did not yet have kids. Today's advice to anyone with kids coming along: find a decent metro area, job, school system, good school attendance zones, housing you can afford. Every mile away from the primary job will cost you at least $ .40 more driving. How much more could you put into housing instead of commuting. ie a 10-mile further one way commute 20 days per month. (10 x 2 daily x 20 days x $.40= $160 month or $1,920 per year. up in smoke. and after taxes. Say $3,000 before taxes? Put $250 per month more into close in housing less impacted by depreciation. Or just ask the boss for a 4.6% raise ($3,000) tomorrow? yeah. sure.
