The problem with the N GA mountains is that it's become a retirement and second home haven for affluent Atlantans, so land prices have increased dramatically.
I would suggest expanding your search, perhaps to E TN, W NC, NE AL. I will say that when you go west of I-75 in N GA (and into NE AL), the prices start coming down. Take a look at: LaFayette, GA Lake Weiss, AL Mentone, AL Trenton, GA |

Here's a thought - try White County, GA - Helen or Cleveland. The high school is ranked #33 out of 380 GA schools. Alot of the county is National Forest so you would have great views. Job market - not so hot - but you are close enough to Hall County and Gainesville that you could drive there for employment.

Try Polk County, TN (just north of Blue Ridge, GA by 10 miles or so..) -still about 90 minutes north of Atlanta area and real estate prices are significantly less than on the Georgia side. White water rivers (The Ocoee) and plenty of outdoor areas for recreation make it nice. Your close to Murphy, NC or Blue Ridge for stores and Chattanooga or Atlanta are not too far away when you need a larger city.
There are a few small towns that are beginning to be slowly redeveloped in the area (Copperhill and Ducktown) and are getting more tourist traffic OcoeeInfo.com or Polk County/Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce for more info |

I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my inqueries. Just after I posted, we lost our 14 year old cat. It's been extremely hard, especially for our daughter. I'm sorry for not posting of late, but am sure you all understand. Again, thank you all for your responses.

As I have posted elsewhere, I lived in Young Harris/Hiawassee area for a couple of years some 5 years back. Employment is tough. However, I suggest you contact Young Harris College for possible job openings in their maintenance department. They are expanding the school. Of course it is the locals that find out about any sort of job first and usually get the nod.
I suggest you look over in Rabun County (Clayton). There is more going on there usually. The schools there are ok, low crime etc. I know a family that moved there about 18 months ago with their 3 adult children and all three of the children found work. Mind you there are no high paying jobs there. Still, with enough diligence, you can find something I should imagine. Rent for a year in the area and see what happens. Rabun County has a Home Depot and a Walmart. You might find opportunity there. I recommend you try and get a CDL if possible as you might find something with delivery companies. Good luck. |
