New York's or Los Angeles' crime rate and Chicago's crime rate are closer to each other that New York's crime rate is to Paris, London or Tokyo. Are you saying New York and LA aren't world class?
thank you, emathias, for your voice of reason; much appreciated.

could we also add how Paris, London, or Tokyo run rings around Chicago, NY, and LA in their airports, public transit, infrastructure which are far more "world class" than you are going to see in any US city.

And I have my own anecdote. If you board the 53A, S. Pulaski bus at the Orange Line station, heading southbound, the passengers are white, black and Hispanic. First, the Hispanic riders get off the bus, up to 71st St. Then the black passengers disembark between 71st St. and 87th St. South of 87th St., the white passengers get off. Obviously there are exceptions, but this is overwhelmingly the majority of occurrences.

Chicago was indeed the poster child for the northern segregated city. the old "black belt" was squeezed into place by segregation. And there is no question that the pattern of how this relates to a map of the city still shows the effect.

but Chicago is not the segregated city it was. Blacks can and do move to any part of Chicago, including the North Side. I have no doubt that income keeps ghetto residents locked in place and gives them few options as to where to live. And there is no question that our minority community, largely the black portion, is made of up of marginalized folks who society has written off (make that American society, not specifically Chicago).

but i think it is utterly absurd to say the Chicago of today is anything like that city of first half of the 20th century when it comes to segregation. We are, of course, now a far more diverse city and the infusion of large hispanic and Asian communities has shattered the old black/white bipolar divide.

my perceptions of Chicago (and I know others will disagree): I'd say we are a pretty progressive city (and metro area), a place comfortably mixed with the likes of, say, Seattle, SF, LA, NY, Boston. In our own midwest, I think there is a definite link between Chicago and places like Mpls, Madison, Ann Arbor, etc. as being strongly liberal areas. and on a nation scope, yes, I honestly believe that Chicago is part of that mix of coastal California (up to the Pacific NW) and the northeast corridor in how we function.

Blacks can and do live in any part of Chicago without restriction. Poverty and low income keep many of them locked into ghetto neighborhoods.

I contend that we don't have a "racist city"…..but I damn well believe that we have a tragically racist nation, one that should hang its head in shame for how we have treated our African American community throughout its long and tragic history.

This is a big part of it.

While Chicago's seen a major drop in homicides since the 1990s, other big cities like NY have seen an even steeper drop - so Chicago's headline numbers are comparatively large.

Then you have the right-wing element. Obama is from Chicago, Obama is black, blacks in Chicago are murdering each other, so..... SCARYBLACKSOCIALISTUSURPERPRESIDENTBLARGH.

I don't think that is accurate. Chicago is in a league of it's own when looking at this group of cities.

Wait, what? Tokyo and Paris/London are like polar opposites in terms of crime. Tokyo has a tiny crime rate. London and Paris have significantly higher crime rates than NYC or LA.

U.S. cities don't have particularly high crime rates for global standards, BTW. They have high gun-related homicide rates, but not crime rates. But even looking at gun-related homicide rate (which does not follow overall crime rates), NYC would be closer to London than to Chicago.

I think while we're making comparisons we ought to include facts too. The Midwest is the "Heart of America". Chicago is the dominate city in the Midwest. And unlike LA, Chicago has no peers or equal to challenge it. California has three major cities of which two are Alpha cities.

The cities of LA and Chicago are the governmental heads of the two largest counties in America. LA has horrendous traffic that is tightly controlled, and does not have the number of Interstate highways going through the county as Chicago and Cook do.

California population is three times larger than Illinois. But, and more importantly, if California was a country, it would be the 8th or 9th largest economy in the world. Chicago can never meet this as it does not have a growing season as long or as forgiving.

In the scheme of things Chicago really is no better or no worse than any other city its size. Most of the sensational headlines are sensational for one reason only: $$$$$. It is not because the facts are interesting or even very shocking. It is because Chicago is in the name.

A Black seven year old boy was shot and killed in the South Carolina uplands. It is not nearly as news worthy as the Pastor and eight church members who were gunned down during a bible study in South Carolina. Even this is quickly forgotten because of a gang feud in CHICAGO. OMG! A gang feud? I guess the daring media has forgotten the Valentine's Day Massacre? This was a REAL CHICAO STYLE GANG FEUD. What passes today as gang feud is laughable. It's cowards - most of whom don't know how to handle a gun.

Ignore the media and move on. The less people talk about it, the less the media will write about it. When it doesn't bring $$$$ media will stop writing about Chicago, too.
