Why can't people put down their damn phones? Seriously I do not understand what is so fascinating on people's phones. I see half the drivers in North Texas looking at their phones while driving. We go out to a restaurant on a Friday night, all the couples around us are looking at their phones. It's like a scene out of a SciFi movie! What is everybody doing??? Yeah, I check my texts, email, stocks and news a couple times a day. Not that much happens in a day. So, is it porn, video games? It seriously disturbs me. People are oblivious to everything around them. That electronic device is their captor. It's INSANE.

Phones contain information vital to driving such as directions. Phones also have replaced the car radio for traffic reports and music. Even back in the day I religiously switched the car radio to "WCBS 880" on the "8's" for traffic and weather. Use of the cellphone for the same function is not really different.

You can't stop the march of time with emotion.

I don't condone drinking and driving but I've been saying this for years, texting & driving is just as bad, if not worse!

There's so many gray areas to drinking & driving. Like one poster said, a .08 is a vastly different situation than like a .25. You can get a .08 by some instances of drinking in moderation like a few glasses of wine or beers. Also think about how each state varies by law while you have some states give you a slap on the wrist, but a state of Arizona will get you jail time. Overall, this will be a controversial subject until we die. We can all agree that drinking and driving is bad, but it's one of the only criminal infractions that the best human beings get charged for. How many bars are all over the place? (and I don't mean for drunks, I'm talking social gatherings in moderation) Do you think everyone just walks to them? There definitely needs to be a system in place for a degree of minor cases to have their backgrounds rehabilitated.

Texting & driving is just ignorant. Unlike the varying degrees of drinking & driving, you have 100% judgement whether you decide to text while driving! (unless you're drinking or high)

The issue I keep raising is ignored; is changing the song texting, or is it like changing a radio station? The law defines it as texting. So is looking at Mapquest so that you're not driving befuddled. Which is more dangerous?

All of these problems are going to go away once self driving cars hit the road and eventually become mandatory, but will probably take about 10-20 yrs to become mandatory.

At that point, no more need for laws like this, DUIs, texting while driving, etc.

It will also mean no more required auto insurance, (for collision anyway) no more long red lights, no more getting pulled over for traffic violations, less need for police out patrolling the streets, etc etc.

I don't see people giving up control in that manner.

Great topic tijlover

I was listening to talk radio about a year ago and someone was on there saying the technology already exists for the powers that may be to shut off phones when people are in their cars.
It has not been implemented due to politics etc.

There are apps Parents can put on kids phones or we can put on our own to disable phone while driving.

I do not think it will be long our phones will be disabled while we drive.

It is a shame government has to get involved. That people don't have enough discipline.
But lives need to be saved.
Just like with alcohol.

I think Marijuana will be next with impaired driving accidents and government laws with all the legalization of it.

Texting does take your eyes and thoughts of the road which is dangerous.

I think while impaired by alcohol and or drugs is your judgement is off in your brain with response time, visually, thinking you can do something and you cannot etc.

good luck with your self driving car dream. Most of society has to accept it to become a reality and most people don't want self driving cars.

Self driving cars will simply shift the accidents caused by humans to accidents being caused by the self driving cars.

Here is a self driving car that crashed into a barrier on the highway.

$3000/$11000
Cdl driver / their boss
If a cdl driver is stopped for having/ using a handheld device, first number is the fine for the driver. Their boss, since they own the truck gets the second number.
The driver also gets black balled from the industry, as it's considered more severe an infraction than a rollover by the industry.
I'd say $5500 for you car drivers is a great place to start.

I wouldn't be in favor of the $5500, but I would be in favor of $1000 for the first offense.
