Although unlikely, what if Congress ratified the second amendment with a total gun ban for civilians. Would it be like the prohibition era where citizen just hid their guns and sold them illegally?

Would there be a massive civil disruption?

Would Senators complain that the economy in their respective states has suffered an irreparable blow due to the lost tourism that depended on hunting? Similarly, all the industries that depend on guns would join the complaints: sporting goods stores, local places that host gun shows, gun and ammo stores, manufacturers, etc?

Would the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) be sued by the government to force it to surrender its database? Would its members be targeted to make them relinquish their weapons?

Would crime rates go down?

Would the government also ratify the 4th Amendment right against search and seizure without a warrant based on probable cause of a specific crime and the 5th Amendment right to due process of law and just compensation for property taken by the government?

I'm just curious I know a very small minority is talking about a total gun ban but I was wondering what you all thought the outcome would be?

Would it be like the prohibition era where citizen just hid their guns and sold them illegally? Yes

Would there be a massive civil disruption? Yes

Yes

Would the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) be sued by the government to force it to surrender its database? Don't know

Would its members be targeted to make them relinquish their weapons? Probably, yes

Would crime rates go down? Almost certainly, no

Would the government also ratify the 4th Amendment right against search and seizure without a warrant based on probable cause of a specific crime and the 5th Amendment right to due process of law and just compensation for property taken by the government? Wouldn't be too surprised; at that point anything could happen.

My answers based on talk overheard from the small but passionate and vocal number of gun-owners I know, none of whom (by the way) has ever committed a gun crime.

The unintended consequences would be off the chart.

Civil war 2.

Thats the only logical conclusion.

Wrong...if there ever was repeal of the second amendment, it would be the result of nationwide paradigm shift in attitudes. People would have had enough of senseless killings.

The gun nuts would go out with a whimper.

At any rate, repeal of the second amendment would likely leave the gun issues to the states except that guns may be banned in their entirety IN DIFFERENT STATES as the Constitutional right to own a gun would no longer exist.

There would never be a complete ban on guns or an amendment that would ban guns.

There are millions of veterans who love and own guns. They take their oaths seriously and they don't come with expiration dates.

If their oaths are to the Constitution and the Constitution is changed, then they will accept the changes because that will be the will of the people and part of the Constitution.

First, the 2nd is not responsible for "senseless killings", criminals are. Last, one doesn't have to own firearms to join the NRA.

It will never happen. We as a country would probably lose our form of Government before a total repeal of the 2nd Amendment.

As to whether it would reduce gun Violence - just look at a place like Australia where they used to have quite liberal gun ownership laws - that is until they had a mass shooting and public agreed to make serious changes. Now they ban assault weapons and hi-cap clips and they have had few additional mass shootings.

Here is a funny explanation from an Aussie:

I know. I am very pro guns. However, I am trying to picture what a total ban would look like. I also have been pretty vocal in the past about being a member of the NRA.

Unfortunately, if there was a full ban veteran's would be the ones most screwed. Most have firearms that would be illegal so they would have to give them up and they would have to protect a constitution that they don't believe in. If they decided to go against the constitution their life would be made he** so it be interesting in this scenario.
