ISS - THE AMERICAN LOCKDOWN: Is prison reform on the horizon? (http://www.southernstudies.org/2009/06/post-18.html - broken link)

The source states that one out of 31 American adults is behind bars or on parole or probation. Since a huge majority of those are men, it is probably correct that one out of 17 adult males is currently under judicial restraint. Those are probably outnumbered by those who are not, but once were or will be. In realiity, it is probably fair to say that at least ten percent of all American males will serve time during their lifetimes.

Which, by extension, implies that one out of ten children has a father who will serve time. Two or three kids in every classroom. What is the psychological and emotional effect on these children, and how will they fare as members of our society at some future date?

I can hardly wait until Monday, when all the posters who "work hard for what they have" (which liberals are stealing from them) return to their office computers and start remiding us about how all those prisoners deserve what they get (as do their children), for their failure to take responsibility for their own lives.
Interesting you should mention that. I know a guy that has spent more of the last 40 years in prison than out of. Some of these terms were for taking the lives of other people. Interesting thing is, his father was the same way and his son was arrested and sentenced to 5 years for assault before he could buy beer.

Imagine what the statistics would show if all the real criminals (Cops and Politicians) would actually get prosecuted for the crimes they commit against humanity on a daily basis?

Sure would be a better safer world to live in............

Five percent of all Americans will be arrested and prosecuted for a crime this year. Adult men comprise about a third of all people, and make up a high proportion of those prosecuted, one can assume tnat nearly 15% of all American males will be hauled off to jail for something or other this year. How long will it be before it's your turn? These other countries must be terrible places to live, with all those criminals allowed to run loose. Like Canada, Netherlands, Norway. Or don't they have as many as we do? Does Norway have just as many criminals as the US, and 95% of them are allowed to just walk around, without prosecution? Or are Americans 20 times as likely to be crimanals as Norwegians?

We have more people per capita in prison than anyone else, this is so very sad especially considering that we are so free... It is also interesting that our country's capitol is one of the biggest crime cities in the wole world. Think of how an outsider must view this, when they look at our capitol and see some of the highest murder numbers in the world.

how many people are in prison for non violent drug offenses?

I think those people make up a large percentage of the prison population.

Drug prohibition is a failure and was only created to destroy the Constitution. Too bad we cannot bring back the Founding Fathers to straighten this mess out.

ISS - THE AMERICAN LOCKDOWN: Is prison reform on the horizon? (http://www.southernstudies.org/2009/06/post-18.html - broken link)

• The United States has 5% of the world's population, yet possesses 25% of the world's prison population;
• More than 2.38 million Americans are now in prison, and another 5 million remain on probation or parole. That amounts to 1 in every 31 adults in the United States is in prison, in jail, or on supervised release;
• Incarcerated drug offenders have soared 1200% since 1980, up from 41,000 to 500,000 in 2008; and
• 60% of offenders are arrested for non-violent offensives--many driven by mental illness or drug addiction.

I believe those statistics might be a little off. Be careful when reading news like this. Stats get skewed to attract attention. I would believe however that 1 in every 15 males goes to jail.

My dad went to jail when I was 11, and then again when I was 16. He deserved it, and frankly, I think his sentence was too small. He is actually a very nice guy, but there are many laws he thinks he can break and get away with it. I always just saw him as stupid and irresponsible.

Some people let their father's failure bring down their own lives, others learn from their dad's mistakes and become better than them. All up to chance, and the mindset of the youth.

thanks.
I read this today in the Crestview News, Crestview, Fl. It cited the U.S. Dept. of Justice on the statistic. I can find their website and see if the statistic is corroborated.
