It isn't any different than calling a black person a n-----
I believe our society has gone to extremes on this. I have no problem if racial/ethnic/gender slurs happen.
If I do not like a Mexican slur and I feel it is going too far, I simply may not watch that program. Businesses will not want to loose certain clientele if the programs they sponsor affect their bottom line.
I also look at the context around the slur. Is it something that it is with tastful humor? If it is not and goes into the real of degrading and tastless, enough people will react and simply send letters to the sponsors.
To enact laws against this type of speech is not my way of handling it.
But as I said, I think many people have become so sensitive on this.
Did it further the story-line? Probably, since that show is scripted and not live so it was part of the plot.

Undoubtedly if it was the n-word it would've been censored, but no, it doesn't offend me and I don't think it should bother anyone. Phhhhttt. Big deal!
The words themselves are really nothing. It's all about the intent of the person who said the words.
George Carlin has said the "N-word" (I wish people would just say it) plenty of times in his act because it was relevant to his subject matter. He has plenty of black fans. The late comedian Bill Hicks has also used it. On the other hand, the way Michael Richards used it..well, it speaks for itself. To think that black people will get upset at a good joke is ridiculous. When they asked Paul Mooney what he though about Michael Richard's rant, he said "There was no humor in it. He could've made it funny. He didn't."
