A drink or two are not goign to showup in your blood.Compnaies have satndrads of content i the blood. The fact is that no one rally wants to have to be resoeponsible for those with alcohol or subsatnces that will lead to be liable for their actions. This is the age of liabilty for other actions since most times those doing the actions have nothing the trial lawyers want. Its prtuely a rection to liabilty claims.Otherwise they would just be sending drunks and those high home or firing them lik ei the past. No longer allowed.
And that is the key there. Sure you have the idiots that break the rules, and get high or drink on the job, but for the most part I'd say the majority that do it is in their off time. Me personally, I certainly have no urge to come into work under the influence of anything. However; if I want to kick back after work in the evening with a drink or two, or even take a toke or two (which I haven't smoked in quite a long time now) that should be my business.
So, according to your reasoning, one can you drink right before work, and just need to abstain while he or she is at work? Technically that's during off time, but you are quite under the influence when you get to work. I do know someone like that at work, she doesn't drink during work but is always intoxicated looking when she first arrives, and it does seriously impact her job performance.

NO! I'm talking about in the evening after work. Not before, not during!
This is one of the reasons why I moved towards self-employment. The fact that an employer will literally shake your pee in front of you to see if you've been having fun on the weekends is the last straw for the thinking man who respects himself. At that point you are just a piece of property; a piece of meat. You're barely even a man. What you do on the weekends is now in question.
As per marijuana specifically, that's a whole new level of stupid. The fact that the most harmless way to expand ones consciousness is illegal and may preclude people from employment speaks to the level of stupidity and Corporatism that is The United States.
Wow, someone thinks like me.
I think the big picture, too, is more than just if you're an employment risk. In order to have a free society, we are going to have crime, etc. But people are so brainwashed to think we have to control everything, and in that process, we are being controlled to no end.
Besides the drug test (and no, I don't do drugs), the financial background check is simply an intrusion.
People say if you aren't doing drugs, you have nothing to worry about. That is like saying if you don't have drugs in your home, then don't be worried about the police just barging in and checking. Fallacies in reasoning.

Yeah I hate the idea of a potential employer checking someone's credit even more so!
Not to add, think of all those real successful people with substance abuse problems, it is entirely possible to be addicted to a substance and function at a normal or high level. As an employer I don't care what you did the night before or 5 minutes after you leave provided your not embarrassing my business (ie wearing the uniform when doing non sense.) But if your on the job doing a bad job because of drug use, your gone.
While I like pot, I haven't smoked it in probably 18 years it's my choice and besides for what you can lose if caught with it today not worth the risk. I have worked with pot smokers, it sucks and if someone is a user and can't quit long enough to pass the test for a job, they probably aren't the kind of worker the company needs anyway.
If it was legalized I would be smoking it as soon as I could.
In todays society we all know that drug screening (when jobs return) is an important part of the hiring process. With all the serious drugs such as heroine, crack, meth, etc. I would pre-screen too.
Why do you smoke marijuana? To put yourself in what kind of state. Now be the employer. Do you want someone working for you in that state? Alcoholics get fired.
