Bayer/Riceland Foods Lawsuit on GMO Rice that caused the US to lose millions of dollars in sales overseas -
Jury awards $136.8 million in genetically-modified rice lawsuit

And in Canada, Monsanto's heavy-handed and assaultive tactics were defeated by Percy Schmeiser, a canola farmer who fought them David-and-Goliath style in court -
Monsanto vs Schmeiser

Percy Schmeiser is a farmer from Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto's Round-Up Ready Canola. Monsanto's position was that it didn't matter whether Schmeiser knew or not that his canola field was contaminated with the Roundup Ready gene, or whether or not he took advantage of the technology (he didn't); that he must pay Monsanto their Technology Fee of $15./acre. The Supreme Court of Canada agreed with Schmeiser, ruling that he didn't have to pay Monsanto anything..

Further -
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that "GM foods pose a serious health risk" and calling for a moratorium on GM foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health." ...full story

the Irish government discovered they'd accidentally planted banned GM maize, originating from Monsanto. In this case, the contamination originated from the seed supplier, Pioneer Hi-Bred Northern Europe, a subsidiary of DuPont. Random tests by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF), discovered that three out of 1,000 plants were contaminated by Monsanto's illegal GM maize, NK603. The crop was subsequently destroyed to protect organic farms in the area.
But the full extent of the contamination is uncertain, as it was only discovered through random testing. The seed had already been verified as "GM-free" by Pioneer Hi-Bred itself.

Other recent cases of widespread contamination include:
2010: Monsanto's GM corn was discovered across 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) in seven German states. Since Germany doesn't allow GM corn to be planted, the farmers had to destroy their crops. These farmers had to "eat" their losses, as the seed companies refused to accept liability for the contamination.

2007: Pollen drift from GM maize (MON810) fields were found to have contaminated hundreds of conventional and organic farmers in Spain, the only country in the EU that allows GM maize to be cultivated.

In the latter case, a 2009 Greenpeace report documents the profound socioeconomic and human impacts the contamination has had. Part of the summary reads:

"The farmers' stories tell of an alarming reduction in the amount of organic maize being grown and the direct negative impacts that genetically modified organisms have on the population. These organic producers have voluntarily opted out of the conventional or GM farming model, many out of dedication to the principles of sustainability.
Now, they face contamination from neighboring GM crops, even when they take measures to try to avoid cross pollination of the plants. For an organic farmer, genetic contamination is an unmitigated disaster. This report tells the stories of real people who have experienced losses not of their own making. Adding insult to injury, they often have to pay for testing or other protection measures themselves.
... There are no safeguards for MON 810 cultivation, and co-existence of GM and non-modified crops is impossible."

There are three reasons that consumers and farmers do not want the genetically manipulated crops :

1) The seeds are sterile, which means that, unlike in a normal farming environment, the seeds cannot be reproduced from the current crop. Seed providers like Monsanto set their prices - and can fix them wherever they want, making farmers dependent solely on them and what ever price they choose. Also as the above lawsuit shows, Monsanto aggressively ‘goes after’ individual farmers who do not pay them for their GMO seed - even when they do not use it!

2) Not enough testing has been done to ensure the safety of these seeds or their products. Everything from stomach lesions in mice fed the GMO product - that caused 40% of the mice to die from these lesions; through the allergies to undeclared genetic alterations to the seed and product like brazil nuts or dandelions; to the odd occurrence of the formation of antibodies and allergic reactions to antibiotics like penicillin - are all “unintended consequences” of the unpublished and unreported alteration of the GMO seeds. FDA-employed scientists presented warnings that the Flavr Savr® tomato could generate toxins in foods and trigger allergies. Still it was approved. These foods are presenting more toxins that must pass through your colon, some of which can become trapped creating a toxic colon.

3) Farmers, but especially organic farmers, know what happens when you ‘kill soil’ - remove from it all of the organisms that support life. On farms that large companies own, they genetically modify their crops, they don’t rotate crops which gives the earth time to replenish itself. Instead they simply soak into the ground chemical fertilizers that force the land to yield vegetation, the same vegetation. They kill many of the bugs that naturally would live and die in the soil replacing nutrients. This is environmentally unsound, and can cause a “Dust Bowl” effect. Dead soil is very hard to rebuild.

Sorry if you think that people who know these things are “unintelligent” or are just being argumentative. The truth is that no one person who makes a single claim or reference on a discussion forum of “See? I’m right and everyone else is wrong! You are not supposed to argue with me!” without understanding that most of us who challenge it may actually have other information.

Default Monsanto monopolozies seed market?

So the only way to get GMOs on the market in mass quantities is to monopoloze the seed distribution market? Make sure there are NO alternatives and it is a double win for Monsanto--

GMOs are everywhere so they must be good and Monsanto sets the PRICE for the seeds and farmers are trapped and have to use GMOs because there are no other choices. Heirloom seeds in the quantities needed to plant a 100+ acre farm are no longer available in the required quantity?

If GMO products and produce are labled, then I have a choice. Without LABLES I cannot make an informed decision.

If heirloom seeds are available, FARMERS have a choice.

1.GMOs are unhealthy.
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. They cite animal studies showing organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility. Human studies show how genetically modified (GM) food can leave material behind inside us, possibly causing long-term problems. Genes inserted into GM soy, for example, can transfer into the DNA of bacteria living inside us, and that the toxic insecticide produced by GM corn was found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn fetuses.

Numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise. Although there is not sufficient research to confirm that GMOs are a contributing factor, doctors groups such as the AAEM tell us not to wait before we start protecting ourselves, and especially our children who are most at risk.

The American Public Health Association and American Nurses Association are among many medical groups that condemn the use of GM bovine growth hormone, because the milk from treated cows has more of the hormone IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1)―which is linked to cancer.

2.GMOs contaminate―forever.
GMOs cross pollinate and their seeds can travel. It is impossible to fully clean up our contaminated gene pool. Self-propagating GMO pollution will outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste. The potential impact is huge, threatening the health of future generations. GMO contamination has also caused economic losses for organic and non-GMO farmers who often struggle to keep their crops pure.

3.GMOs increase herbicide use.
Most GM crops are engineered to be “herbicide tolerant”―they defy deadly weed killer. Monsanto, for example, sells Roundup Ready crops, designed to survive applications of their Roundup herbicide.

Between 1996 and 2008, US farmers sprayed an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs. Overuse of Roundup results in “superweeds,” resistant to the herbicide. This is causing farmers to use even more toxic herbicides every year. Not only does this create environmental harm, GM foods contain higher residues of toxic herbicides. Roundup, for example, is linked with sterility, hormone disruption, birth defects, and cancer.....

Default What does Monsanto have to hide?

SInce GMOs are so safe, why all the secrecy about who is using them and where?

When is the last time you heard about AGENT ORANGE making people sick or killing them?

The use of genetically engineered (GE) crops has increased enormously over the last decade, without a corresponding increase in government oversight. Industry has fought hard against strict oversight and testing and has even blocked efforts to label GE food products as such, leaving U.S. consumers in the dark about how their food is produced and what it contains. As consumers have become increasingly concerned about food safety and health, demands for federal and state food labeling legislation have intensified.

We need labeling and let consumers make their own choice...
I would say close to 90% of products outside the produce isle would need to be labeled GMO... That might get the sheeple realizing they are being fed massive amounts of corn and soy in just about everything in the store from Tuna to Potato Chips..

Cheap crappy unhealthy food that has a high profit margin for industrial ag...

Might as well round up the lawyers and get the suite against industrial ag started for causing a diabetes epidemic by sneaking high fructose corn syrup into so many products... The industrial ag gang runs away with the profit and leaves the citizenry to pick up the health care tab for their deceitful tricks..

The "oh food will be more expensive" argument for GMO's does not hold water, if we factor in the lack of nutritional value in GMO and the plethora of health risks directly and indirectly related to GMO or corn and soy products..
