My family is moving to the Winston-Salem area in a few months. I am an Emergency Room nurse and was wondering if anyone has information about the hospitals out there (which ER is the best).
We also have 2 girls (ages 6 and 4) and we are looking for a nice, family oriented neighborhood with good schools. Any ideas? Thanks

North Carolina Baptist - affiliated with Wake Forest / Bowman Gray Medical School - and Forsyth Hospital. Both have online access. Personally, I'd rather work at a teaching hospital. My preference!

City of Winston-Salem. Both are, but Bowman Gray is directly affiliated with Baptist and I believe that Forsyth is a major clinical rotation site.

I think both are short of nurses. Baptist has the ER for children, but Forsyth does not as of last I heard. Forsyth has a labor and delivery, but Baptist does not. I have had relatives who worked in and those who were patients in both hospitals. From what I have seen Forsyth seems to be the better of the two. Kernersville and Clemmons are both quiet areas where you might want to look into living. Both are within pretty good driving distance from either hosptial.

Default ER's

We are moving to Kernersville in a April. I also work in an ER (Nashville, TN) I am leaning towards Forsyth Medical Center because that hospital is trying to get approval to eventually open a sister hospital- including a 16 bed ER in Kernersville. Then I could transfer there and be even closer to home. Since there are no HCA hospitals for me to transfer to, Forsyth seems to be the closest to what I am used to. I have heard that the Baptist hospital is also a nice place to work.

I have been studying the area for months now (since my hubby got transferred there) and we decided on Kernersville for the schools and the small town atmosphere, with the bigger town amenities like their own Lowe's/Home Depot/Kohl's/Target/Walmart/ and even STARBUCKS... They have many nice subdivisions there.
My hubby is building a new Women's Pavillion at Forsyth Medical Center, as well. It takes him about 10 min to drive to work from Kernersville.

I work at Forsyth and I love it! I have been here going on 3 years....both are great hospitals I just dont like the way Baptist is turning people away b/c of insurance! We have a wonderful PEDS unit here, NICU, L&D, GYN all the women and children units you need! Plus we have wonderful stroke and cancer centers! Just my opinion!

If it matters to you, Wake Forest Univ Baptist Medical Center has a level 1 trauma rating, Novant (Forsyth) does not.

just so you won't be so confused, Wake Forest School of Medicine was formerly Bowman Gray School of Med.
you will also hear wfubmc called 'baptist hospital'.
forsyth medical center has been owned by novant for several years.
You'll hear it called the other names, cause to us old-timers, it will always be those old names!

wfubmc is also building a new hospital/er in Mocksville which is in Davie county.

My experience when I was trapped in a vehicle after an aa, and was asked which hospital I wanted to go to, I was told "ma'am, I would advise baptist, they have a level 1 trauma unit". I thought why did they even ask me? lol

imo, some people have better feelings about one hospital over the other. both are good but in different ways, obviously. I'm not sure how to word this, but my experience has been that when you find a good md in a certain specialty, whichever hospital they have privileges is the one you will be using and you will like that hospital. but like most non-teaching hospitals, fmc is nicer for the patients.

the deal with women's healthcare is that baptist hospital stopped delivering babies in the early 1970's (I think) to consolidate with forsyth hospital, so the ob/gyn residents see clinical patients at wfubmc and fmc. BUT, the nicu is at wfubmc. fmc does have an intermediate care nursery, thus the ped residents visit fmc also. confused yet?
