Besides training:
1.) I would take your wife to the store and or range first. Allow her to pick out what weapon she likes.
2.) Any weapon your wife chooses needs to first fit her hands, and she will need to be able to manipulate it properly, otherwise it will not server its purpose.
3.) What is the weapon being bought for, home defense, carry conceal, just range use?
4.) How much are you willing to spend?

These all may seem like generic questions, but take if from someone first hand, I picked out a gun for my wife, had her in the store, she was able to pull the slide back on a Diamond Back 9mm, once I got it home, she could not use it. Sold it, months later she wanted to try and get a hand gun again, this time I made my wife check multiple ones side by side before making any decision. It did not matter what I liked or though my wife should get. It was all what she liked and she could manipulate. If you don't let your wife make the choice for herself, odds are she will never use it.

Your best bet is to perform all of the above actions at a range that has samples of the various types, and will let you rent some guns to try out before buying any. Could save you allot of money in the long run. Good luck in your search.

What rigby said, guns are like shoes, it needs to fit her.

The 380 had bad recoil due to it's size and low weight, in general the heavier the firearm, the less the recoil. This applies to all calibres, a very small 9mm will have more recoil than a larger, heavier one.

Go rent a bunch of different ones and see which one works best for her. Also get her some professional training as this will greatly impact her choice and confidence in the gun she chooses.

My wife and girls REALLY enjoy shooting the Glock 19. However for everyday carry they prefer G26.

Have her check out a Beretta 9mm PX4 Compact
The compact still has the rotating barrel system that helps reduce muzzle rise.

There is a lot to be said for the .22 or .22mag in a small auto frame. Loaded with hollow points they are a very effective weapon for a lady.

Have a look at the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield if they have one, one of the thinnest single stack 9's available.

I'm a woman and in the process of testing out guns to buy. I did like the Glock the best of all the ones I tried. One of them I tried kept jamming--I believe it was a Sig. I did try a 380 and loved it, but don't want something so big for home protection, plus the expense of the bullets

Still haven't picked a final one yet, want to test a few more. Most important thing for me is that it wont' jam, especially if I'm aiming it at someone who broke in and is trying to hurt me and my family.
