The M16A1that was first issued in Vietnam had problems
Major issue was the weapon was introduced into combat without the normal development cycle which led to the below issues
1. Troops told it was "low maintenance" (which led to the weapon not being cleaned)
2. Unchromed chamber (majority of reported problems was a "failure to eject").
3. Sub-standard ammunition
Yes but it's been tweaked quite a bit since Vietnam, 50 years of changing this and that. Now the AR platform is rock hard reliable, accurate, and dependable. That's also part of the popularity.
First off Academy sports pulled the AR platform rifles from the shelf's but still sells them. If a company would pander in such a stupid way I will not spend my money with them. Screw Academy there are better places to buy. Try Palmetto State Armory, I would pass on the Bushmaster myself. the Smith is fine but PSA IMO is a better gun and buy. You can buy a stripped lower for about 69 bucks right now and that is the only part you have to have sent to a FFL and do the BGC, rest of the parts are all to your door shipped. If you don't want to build a lower they have full lowers built for Blemished for 179. I have one and I don't know where the blemish is. Uppers complete are about 299 so all in for 500 with a charging handle.
Thanks but too much work, I rather go to Academy, get the Bushmaster or M&P, and be done. Buy my ammo, back home in about 30 minutes with gun and ammo.
I agree, just buy something nice and simple to shoot.
How much is AR ammo?
You can buy the steel Tula FMJ ammo for about .21 a round. Some people don't like steel, but whatever works. Standard Winchester or Remington brass target ammo for maybe .30 or .35 a round at wallmart. JHP for .50 on up (over a $1 a round) depending on quality.
So, why buy any kind of AR style rifle?
Go get the Ruger Ranch Rifle Mini-14 in .223 caliber.
But then, that is just my opinion. I did not like the M-16 when it first was issued, and I still don't like them, and that dislike extends to all the AR-15 clones out there!
And the wood stock makes it less deadly and not as scary to the left

I handled in bulk for about 1/2 that. The .223 is boring to me Just nothing special in my opinion

Tell me where? Hook a brother up. I buy online from "Cheaper Then Dirt" sometimes. Even the Tula 1,000 round bulk packs are that price. .21 cents a round is about as cheap as it gets nowadays unless you find the rare deal.
